Thanks,
Heard

Re: Pickup beds

I used Last Refuge for 2 beds. They were custom made to my specs and were unassembled when I got them. They were good quality and straight. They are more for the Hot Rod world than the restorer. He gets full payment up front and then I waited a long time (8 months) for mine. I got an authentic 32 bed from Mack Hills in Missouri (660-263-7444) for my current 32 truck and it is a great product. It came assembled and was straight. It comes either welded or riveted. I looked in their catalog and they make a bed for a 35. I paid 1/2 down with balance plus shipping when it was done and ready to ship. I might be wrong but I think they supply Mack Products so I went direct to the manufacturer.

Re: Pickup beds

Mack Hils (one 'L') and Mack Products are one in the same, not to be confused with Mac's or Macs.

Guys I bought a box from Last Refuge, Norm. It has been the worst thing l could have done being l was told he was a stiff .Paid for it Feb 4 2018 and still waiting for the right parts .First the sides were different in the pattern on the sides then one was taller than the other side . He has now told me he was giving my money back still waiting . Good luck with him you will be sorry you did business with him .

Re: Pickup beds

Good info. His prices do seem a little 'too good to be true' so I thought I'd ask.

I just bought a bed from Last Refuge about 6 weeks ago in September .... Here's the result !!!

These are the Bead Rolls and a picture of the front header panel showing that there was a tab ( both sides ) that was not brake bent where it meets the front stake pocket.
Oh, and it was delivered late because he wanted to pocket the $240 shipping charges I paid by delivering it himself a couple weeks later on his way to Bakersfield ... unfortunately I wasn't Home when he dropped it off.

Some People appear to have had good luck with his product though, I Didn't !!!

Mack Hills is where I got my bed parts and they were a perfect fit. Replace tailgate, metal floor, and front panel as well as "pockets" on sides.

Man, that looks awful. Once again, it makes me think of the old saying....

Cheap, Fast, Good. Pick any 2. Good luck trying to get all 3.

Re: Pickup beds

On one of those beads, it looks like they got a bad start then flattened it some & started over. I've done better work without a bead roller but then I take a lot more time to do it too.

I used to live near them back when I was working helicopters in the field. The guy that used to build our fuel truck tanks in Cortez,Co. built a rig to suck prairie dogs out of their burrows. I wonder if he is related in some way to the guy that runs that shop. It's a smaller world up there. A lot of crazy sh!t happens up that way.

Re: Pickup beds

I have no experience with Last Refuge but I do have with Mack Products. I ordered a 33-34 bed from them thru Classic parts in Oklahoma city. I specified the exact repro that was riveted and also specified that the hole in the floor to connect the fuel line not be cut out in order to have a solid bed floor. When it arrived the hole was cut in the bed floor but there was no hole for the fuel fill tube thru the side of the bed. I also found that the wood under the the metal floor which was supposed to be clearanced at the point where the bed seats down over the rear frame kickup was full thickness and held the bed up 3/4 inch too high when the bed was set on the frame. Also the 2 center cross members under the bed floor were crudely fabricated which was ok with me, but the bolt holes did not line uo with the factory holes on the frame. Since the area is so close in those areas it is almost impossible to mark the frame to redrill it. I first called Classic about the issues and they were no help since the order was passed thru to Mack. I called Mack and explained the issues to them, as politely as I could, and was told that if I didn't like the bed to send it back (at my expense - nearly $400.00). I elected to keep it but it was a lot of trouble to chisel out the wood on the bottom, the force of which caused the metal floor to be pushed up, and also to locate and cut the hole for the fuel filler. Should have just fixed my old ragged and rusted out bed and saved the $3000.00 plus! Won't do business with them again!

Think Mack Hills is the goto after northern classic trucks stopped?. Believe mack hills bought some dyes. Don't quote me.

Re: Pickup beds

Yeah, after this whole Last Refuge Disaster, I went ahead and ordered Bed Sides from Mac's Yesterday.
Both Bed sides, Front Header Panel, Rear lower cross section and all 4 stake pockets were $1,289 shipped to my door.

*** Lesson Learned *** The Cheap comes Out Expensive ***

Re: Pickup beds

I like macs but I think they drop ship through Macks. Nothing wrong with that as both offer a guarantee.

I could be wrong, and is often so.

Mac's is a wholesaler that probably makes very little from it. But they have a wide reach of customer base. If its macks it's a solid product through macs. I'd be okay with a design or manufactured product being put in a catalog seen by millions. Just my opinion.

Dennis carpenter might have it also....

but you can order from whom you choose...

Re: Pickup beds

I got the bed for my '32 directly from Mack hils in Missouri a few years ago and I could not be happier with it. The lady I dealt with on the phone was very knowledgeable and courteous and the end product was exactly as ordered and shipped in a timely manner.
