One of Walt's last couple of engines 7 Attachment(s)
Everybody likes to see pic. I can't read but I can look at pic. This one of those odd ball 59 blocks with the 3-1/16 bore. Before I started on this engine I was going to bore to 3-5/16, BUT, when I realized it was only 3-1/16 I didn't want to bore 1/4in. so I just went to 3-3/16, 4in. crank. Max-1 cam, aluminum flywheel, heads and dual carbs. all balanced. This is going in a 37 convertible sedan. I'll post another in a min. Walt

Re: One of Walt's last couple of engines Walt, what is oddball about a 3 1/6" bore in a 59 block? That's what I have in my 36.

Re: One of Walt's last couple of engines A thing of beauty!
Is the cam gear painted white? |
Re: One of Walt's last couple of engines The late parts book refers to them as the 41A and they were a replacement block for the 221 engines starting during the war and likely sometime in 1944 when the government started to allow more spares for civilian products. They have the 59 casting on the back just like the 59A but less bore. They are impossible to detect among the 59 series unless you mike out the bores.

Re: One of Walt's last couple of engines Walt,
Looks like a sweetie. Be sure and post when you run it on your test stand. Quick question: some talk on the Barn recently on valves. I know you grind the stems with solid lifters but what valves do you use and are they separate intake and exhaust or do you use the same valve for both? Thanks John |
Re: One of Walt's last couple of engines Hey Max, I thought those 97 was running rich, so I was supposed to remove them those covers? LOL. Those are mad max carbs, you don't even have to adjust them when he gets through with them. Your the man on 97's. Walt

Re: One of Walt's last couple of engines Nice work. I pulled the 81A out of my 38 sedan and dropped a 59 block in. I traded a sand rail for it, and it was formerly in a marine application down in California somewhere. My 59 block has been bored and is running 49 mercury heads (I think). That's about all I know about it. The trade was risky, but it has good oil pressure and no apparent problems so far. It ain't as purdy as yours though.
