Bubba rant ???

1 Attachment(s)
Ya know i dont usually rant a bunch but this one has got to be seen.....
All our ignition service carry a lifetime warranty ( $ 25 to cover shipping return) and i dont get a lot of return.... So thats good !!!! I do get some but always go out of my way to get it fixed, running good and on the road.
A few months ago i went thru some problem solving with a customer that had purchased our delco replacement distributor....and just shipped him a complete unit all new , when i recieved the problem unit i just put it in a cabinent for later. Well today i took it out of the box and looked it over . The attached picture shows the unit right out of the box. I dont know how you could change anymore parts that this customer did ( which turned not to be ignition).

1=Standard Motor Product condensor , we use only napa RR175 Echlin because the others are terrible !!!
2=Standard Motor contact points. Again terrible in this case ( they make a premium and a cheapie)..We use only CS 786 Echlin ........
3=Aftermarket advance weights and springs...these were so heavy that they took some rpm to swing out and when they did they just jumped out really quick. One spring was changed with another spring!!
4=Customer had added a shim to lower gear , we dont use this as clearance is adjusted to spec when we install the new drive gear.

Only took a few minutes to redo but after shipping a few thousand of these we typically use the best to make it the best distributor on the market.......:D

Rant over ..........

I agree 100%. Sounds like the customer was a real Richard Cranium. The customer is always right up to a point and this guy went way past that point. The Chevy mechanical advance in the 8ba in my '39 p/u still is working flawlessly. thanks for such a quality product.

Re: Bubba rant ???

Were all his parts changing his attempt to correct a perceived problem? You say the problem turned out to not be ignition. Perhaps he was cherry picking quality parts off of you for free.
Strange situation. Every business runs into those situations, and damage can be done to a business by them. You needn't worry, your reputation is golden.

Richard Cranium
A dick head. Richard=Dick, Cranium=Head. Therefore, Richard Cranium

Richard Noggin
Combination of the French name Richard, meaning "Dick", and the German word Noggin, meaning "Head".

My old boss was great doing warranty work. He used to tell me that it was just cheaper to take care of it than have a bad customer. BUT he did have a line not to be crossed and a very few customers tried to cross it. He determined that anyone that knew the person would know why. He also told me once if you touch a vehicle you may have to warranty everything from to the air in the tires to the sun that shined. Sorry you found a polished turd.

Don't forget his cousin, Richard Weed.

I would tell Mr Cranium that he seems to have returned the wrong item, as it's obviously not the one you supplied, and therefore you would like the correct item returned.

As this type of issues isnīt to common i just leave it...make a mark in the book...and next time they call my schedule is fully booked until end of next year...
You canīt win an argument against Mr Cranium...

Yes, there are weasels. Running a business goes hand in hand I guess with dealing with such people from those who I know who have businesses. My father-in-law regularly gets stiffed on board fees at his equestrian center. Although horse people are literally a breed of their own, the excuses they sometimes come up are just unbelievable. I know I could never put up with dealing with their nonsense.

I agree with flatheadmurre--the few times this kind of crap has happened to me I decided to swallow hard to control my tongue. Fix their perceived problem and move on. In one case I did get an opportunity to forewarn another shop to be very cautious and I think it paid off.

But it worked in 2010 when I bought it? Hope these folks are not buying cheap pacemaker batteries...just because they have a lifetime warranty? Sometimes being reasonable is just too lofty a goal for jerks.
Then I remember as a teenager buying broken Craftsman tools at a swap meet and stopping by Sears on the way home to have them replace them...oops'
Bubba your a saint... Chap

Re: Bubba rant ???

After owning my own business for 24 plus years i found it easier to fix the customer then fix the problem. My employees was charged with the same logic.

This post was more of a discussion of defective parts than anything else. The customer has another unit and is happy with a cool running flathead and i just shipped the other one to another happy customer with good ( correct) parts installed.

Just a side note , Standard Motor Products bought Echlin sometime ago. They have a cheapie line and the Echlin line. I usually buy these 10-12 sets at a time . Many times i get the cheapie in the Echlin box , NAPA takes them back..

Do you have pix of the cheapie points vs the Echlin points? I'm using a Chevy distributor and I'd like to know what to look for. Thanks!
