Block cleaning with Babbitt
 

Can anyone tell me if you can bake and bead blast a block that has new Babbitt in it without hurting the Babbitt? Or does the new Babbitt have to come out to bake and blast the block to clean it? I've got a block with new Babbitt that was only dipped, not baked or blasted and the exhaust chambers still have carbon in them... grrrr

It will melt out the babbit. At least the one here at my local machine shop will.

I'm sure it wouldn't need to be baked. Might be able to blast it if you can protect the babbitt, but I don't think I would be doing it. I wouldn't think that there would be enough carbon to cause a problem.

The babbit will be gone when your done with baking it.
If the cooling system is clean a bit of carbon in the exhaust may not be to much of an issue.

Thanks everyone. The block was filthy when taken apart and was dippedto clean. It came fairly clean but could have stood to be blasted and baked. Before I got to see it they Babbitt folks poured the Babbitt. Now I'm trying to figure out what if anything I should do.

I would be more concerned about the water jackets ,should be socked

Just get some long sharp pointy tools and a big jar of elbow grease and chip/scrape the rust out of the water jackets. Same with the carbon in the ports.

What harm will carbon in the exhaust ports cause? As soon as you start running it you will get carbon deposits.
