Special tools

I am thinking about buying a model T next spring, I have one spotted which is in nice shape but as I well know from owning a couple of other antiques it will need some TLC. Knowing the T is a bit different than the Flat head V8 era, I want to put together a tool box of special tools for the car. Can you get me a list of what I should have or if anyone has extras sell me some items?

Lang's has quite a list of tools - it will give you an idea of what is available;

Re: Special tools

The T and Ford flathead vehicles use most of the same tools.

The special T tools depend on what you plan to do.
Hub and rear sleeve puller would be high on my T list.

Re: Special tools

Basic tools are;
These are the tools that would have come with the car/truck.
Screw driver, pliers, double open wrench (1917), jack, oil can, tire iron, head/spark plug wrench and hub cap wrench (https://www.modeltford.com/item/1349.aspx). The hub puller would be a great addition.

From there it is as nhusa said, depends on what you plan on doing, which job the tool is needed for. Don't just go out and buy the tools, study what they sell for. Lots of times tools are way over priced because sellers think they are rare, ok some are but most are not. If you get a T, get the "Model T Ford Service" manual and an owners manual for your year, can be gotten from the parts dealers. Also get parts catalogs, Lang's, Snyder's, Chaiffin's etc. They are free because they want your business. The dealers also sell repair books for different areas of the car, engine, transmission etc. They are put out by The Model T Ford Club of America.

Re: Special tools

I watched a video on band replacement, there was a wrench and the special tool that holds the bands together when loosening them. Both were chained to the transmission, do they come with the tranny?

Re: Special tools

That band combo tool isn't chained to the transmission. The U piece for the band ears is chained to the band wrench. That is because any thing, wrench size or smaller, like band nuts and band springs IF they fall into the abbess below the transmission inspection cover.....that is BAD news.

You have to fish it out, pull the hogshead (trans cover) or turn the Model T upside down and shake out those bad things.

That makes sense, as a motor head buddy of mine always says when things fall deep in the dark places. “Why wouldn’t it?”
