Fan shaft / bearing assembly

What kind of grease/oil am I supposed to use in the fan bearing assembly?

Re: Fan shaft / bearing assembly

This has been debated back and forth forever, but....add an ounce or so of ENGINE oil, then turn the fan so that it can drain back out. Replace the plug! What residual oil remains is enough to properly lube the bearings. If you don't follow the procedure to drain the oil back out, when you start the engine, oil will sling from one side of the engine compartment to the other....not a pretty mess to clean up! DD

Here's a thread dealing with this that you must read. As a side note, I made my own fan hub pulley in 1999 before DRAKE came out with his version. I would recommend replacing the old with the new version that runs on bearings. This is a good case where "old isn't gold".

Thanks for the link, that is perfect. I will probably assemble what I have for now but definitely consider the upgrade at some point.

Re: Fan shaft / bearing assembly

Suggest you upgrade before these pulleys are no longer manufactured due to lack of demand as the old car market changes. Plus , remember 70 years of flexing can cause old steel fan blades to crack and break. I still have the repaired slits in my hood from flying metal.

Re: Fan shaft / bearing assembly

There was a service bulletin for a change but I haven't read it. Motor oil is still viable but I think the bulletin mentioned gear lube which was likely for leaky ones to slow up the leak. New parts are still available so a person doesn't have to live with a leaky one.

@19Fordy: Do you know where I could get a fan bearing assembly? In your post 3 years ago you. Mentioned @drake are these still available? Yep, you were right mine went out the other day aftera longrun on a warm day. Guessing I didn't get enough lube in it.

Re: Fan shaft / bearing assembly

Specifically, what yrar are you refering to? The later models used a sealed bearing that was used as a water pump bearing in another application. The shaft is too long and must be cut off, but the bearing is a perfect fit. If this what you are interested in, I have the part number for the sealed bearing someplace.

This picture should give you all you need to know (If you're talking later model [8BA] engines.)

I cannot tell a lie, I "borrowed" it from The "Ford Truck Enthusiastss's Forum". I have, howevr, replaced the fan bearing on an 8BA with one of these (after "triming" it down), and it is indeed the proper bearing.

You're gonna need a cut-off wheel to do the triming; oviously, a hacksaw won't do it.
