Flathead Cam Info/ID
 

I just ran across this reground cam. Looks to be a pre-42 core, with the longer distributor drive. Measured lift is .370. Stamping on the end is a 756? Not sure if that is a Ford stamp or something from the cam grinder?

Definetly not a Ford stamping. Not familiar with that number, but it is a regrind for sure.

I did some more accurate measuring tonight. It is .366 measured lift on both intake and exhaust. The stamping is 736 I believe.

When did Ford go from press on timing gears to bolt on? This is bolt on, but still the long distributor drive. Or was it converted to bolt on timing gear?

Doesn't look like any sort of stamping that I've seen by any of the cam guys . . . but who knows.

Have a real good look around the side of the flange the timing gear fits to. Harmon and Collins cams were often marked here, it can be pretty faint.

I have a cam marked 6545 around the edge, but have no idea what it is either. One of these days I might degree it in just for kicks.

I'll take a closer look for more markings. When did Ford go to bolt on timing gears?

Bolt ons used in partial production in 1940. Don't know for sure date of total changeover, but certainly all bolt-on from 1942. The '42 cam (with button for earlier cars) became the general replacement cam eventually.

So this is likely ground from a 40-41 core?

I would think there would be a lot of no-name cams floating around. A local shop here has been re-grinding for years (starting from at least the 50s).

I would think '40-41. same beginning timing as all the '37-51 cams, with the '32-6 being a bit more radical.
Mechanics HATED the press on gears, because if you didn't have the special KRW jig the gear would generally rotate a few degrees during the pressing and the mechanic had to repeat the job until it came out right or he got mad...
