39 coupe radiator

Hi guys

I decided to get radiator rodded/cleaned professionally. In summer the car constantly runs 210 (highway or stop and go) it never boils over but I would like it at 195 or up to no more than 200.

I’m runnin 170 stats. And have double check heads w infer-red and run 50/50 mix antifreeze.

Any insights / tricks you and lend? I don’t think I need remove the fan ~ do I?

It is a little easier to remove the radiator if the fan is out. Fan removal is easy 4 bolts, but you will probably need to whack a chisel into the gap between the crank and fan flanges. In any case, put a piece of cardboard between fan and radiator while maneuvering either fan or radiator out of and into the car.

Hey, Andy -

2 things.....if you can fit a piece of paneling or carpet instead of cardboard it will be that much more protection than cardboard. It takes nothing to wrinkle or pierce these radiators.

The other thing is if you don't already have a guy - I used Hawthorne Industrial Radiator in Wayne. I just got the pressure clean and patch without the full rodding.

Good Luck!

What kind of temperature drop do you get through the radiator?

Thanks John and rest all good feedback.

Flatjack that’s a very good question and I never checked that. I’ll try as soon as weather warms a bit.

Speaking from my experience, you will find much improved cooling having the radiator properly cleaned. It should be worth your efforts.

1939 Standard Coupe. Had my radiator serviced and cleaned at recent engine rebuild.
Run 180 stats. It sits on this 180 temp once system has warmed up. On very hot day running at highway speed temperature is a steady 180. Again endorse a radiator service.
I now know its right and it gives peace of mind and confidence to continue driving.

Seth / Phil thanks. Cause I was telling a buddy I don’t mind spending the $$ if it fixes the issue. Your words gave me the additional confidence I need.
