Body Badges on Australian assembled Fords

https://www.fordbarn.com/forum/attach...p;d=1479770564https://www.fordbarn.com/forum/attach...p;d=1479614529
This little Brass Badge was Soldered onto the bottom left of the Cowl starting with the 1930 Ford Model A, and continued on to the 1932, 1933 and 1934 Ford V8 and 4 Cylinder Fords. The top picture show it loose, and then as fitted onto the Cowl of a 1934 Ford V8. Because Australia is a member of the Commonwealth, Ford Australia sourced their Fords from Canada, another member of the Commonwealth. That is why the Union Jack Flag over a map of Australia is depicted on this Badge.

Body Badge for the 1935, 1936, 1937 and 1938 Fords made in Australia.
While all Fords manufactured in the USA and Canada are all steel, that was not the case in Australia. All 1930 through 1934 Ford Bodies made in Australia are full of Wood. That includes the Floor, Doors etc. When the all new 1935 Fords were released in Australia, they did away with the wooden framed bodies, except on the Roadsters, Phaetons and Roadster Utes. To advertise this new feature, Ford Australia designed an all new Badge to herald the fact that they were All-Steel. Ford chose to attach these badges with a nut on the end. They were much easier to fit than the previous one that was soldered on. Please refer to the above pictures that show the front of the new Badge, as well as the rear showing the Attachments. the last photo show the Badge as fitted to a 1936 Ford. These Badges were not fitted to the 1935 and 1936 Roadsters, Phaetons or Roadster Utes, as they continued to use wood in the Doors etc.

Trevor,

As you know, the relationship between Ford Australia and Ford of Canada went beyond the ties of the Commonwealth and sourcing as at that time Ford Australia was a wholly-owned subsidiary of Ford of Canada and remained so for decades. All of the Commonwealth countries, save the United Kingdom, where Ford had a corporate presence in that era were Ford of Canada subsidiaries to take advantage of the favorable terms of trade within the Commonwealth.

I read somewhere that the Depression hit England early on and the resulting unemployment encouraged a lot of factory workers to emigrate to Australia. I would imagine that some of them were skilled in fine coachwork and found work in Geelong.

1939 - 1940 Ford Australia Body Badge.
This was the final badge that Ford Australia applied to their cars. They were fitted to the Australian 1939 and 1940 Fords. Once again, they have a Thread fixed on the back, and were attached to the Cowl through a Hole with a Nut attached to the inside. Of the three badges used during the Thirties, this one was the most elaborate. It had a stylised Ford Script over a map of Australia and was Enamelled in Black. The bottom picture shows this badge, as fitted to a 1939 Ford Standard.

It seems like these Ford V8 Body Badges are like Gold these days. A 35-38 Badge just sold on eBay for A$760, which is an unbelievable price.

Trevor, Don't forget the oval brass BRITISH EMPIRE PRODUCT badge on the dash of Aussie 33 and 34 Fords. I don't have a pic of one but you do. Regards, Kevin.

Ford Dash Badge that was attached to the Dash of 1933 and 1934 Australian Fords proclaiming that it was a "British Empire Product". Kevin, this is the Badge that you mention. Not sure if these Badges were on earlier models?
An expert on the Australian 1932 Fords may be able to shed light on this?

This is the British Empire badge on my 32 Ford, apparently there are some of these badges on 1933 & 34 Fords in New Zealand and a Aussie 34 Roadster and one was found on a 1932 car in Canada.

Re: Body Badges on Australian assembled Fords

Bobby, These "All Steel Badges" would have been on the 35/36 Coupe Utes, but not the 35/36 Roadster Utes, as the Roadster Utes continued to use lots of wood in the Doors and Cowl.

I have never seen a Badge like this one. Is that one fitted to a 1932 Ford Deluxe Three Window Coupe?

A page from the original 1935 Ford Sales Brochure promoting the new "All Steel Closed Bodies by Ford". You will note that the statement only mentions the "closed" bodies and doesn't include the "open" bodies, as the open bodies still retained wood in the cowl and doors. Notice that Ford used the Body Badge in their Advertising.
What is unusual in this photo is the "X" in the side panel of the Cowl. Early 35 Fords did not have this "X".

Ian, That is a great badge and different from the ones fitted to Australian assembled Fords.
The reason why I picked your 1932 Ford as a Deluxe Three Window Coupe, is because in my understanding, that was the only Body style that came with a Glove Box in the Dash. Did your car originate from Great Britain?

Trevor, Our car was built up with all the parts, the chassis and running gear, original Engine and components, gearbox, transmission and all the body parts, were sourced in N.Z.except the rear fenders and running boards, and Tires which were originally from U.S.
This Coupe is registered as a N.Z. 1932 Ford as it has mainly all 1932 parts and I know most of the history about them.
