Road Forced Balanced Tires
 

New to me.

On a standard rotating balancer, this new machine looks the same except for a roller.

This roller applies about a 1000 lbs? which mimics the tire on the vehicle on the road.

I believe the tire is actually rotated on the rim? to start with a better balance before application of wheel weights.

I did have vibration in car at two certain speeds, 55 and 70 mph.

Now, the balance could have been messed up originallly on a normal machine, but this balancing works and it's just a bit more expensive.

JW, Love your 56 wagon. I knew of static balance and dynamic balance but never under load?! This is new to me. Looks like it worked for you. I do not understand how they rotated the tires on the rim? How did you come across this? Since I am very familiar with "Land of Oxnard" and Somis Market, I am curious of who did the balancing for you. Cheers - Bob 93021

Road force balancing has been available for many years, and Hunter was/is I think the first manufacture. My employer received a new Hunter the year I retired in '06 so I had very little time learning it's operation, but our local Tire Rack was the first tire store in our area to use Hunter Road Force balancers, and is my choice for the best balance, imo.

Rotating the tire on the wheel for better balance is common, but the Hunter shows more precisely where to position the tire.

Years ago Hunter made an on car balancer where you jacked up a wheel and placed two powered rollers under the tire. You attached a bracket to the wheel then spun up the tire and I believe used a strobe to figure out the imbalance. This old type of balancer is supposed to be very good because like the road force machine you have the vehicle weight on the tire plus you are essentially balancing the entire rotating assembly including the drum. Some guys have found shops around that still have them and have had good results resolving tire/wheel/drum imbalance issues.
