Anyone have any experience with putting a Carter on their A?

What kind of Carter carb? I have been trying to decide how to carb and exhaust my newly rebuilt Model A motor with touring cam and V-8 clutch, etc. I am leaning towards a "big Stromberg 97" but maybe a Weber -- I don't know. I cannot find CFM specs for the Webers, but the big 97 handles about 250 CFM which is about what a Model A can use, what with its 200 c.i. size. The Weber sold by most of the vendors, the 32/34 was originally designed for 2 liter motors. Your thought?

It’s the Carter W-1 and was quite common as stock on a lot of chevys and other makes from the early 30’s to late 40’s. You’d recognize it if you saw it, that’s how common these were. They are downdraft and are apparently good for mpg. Doesn’t look to hard to fit it up and a friend gave me one the other day.

Of course most of us know about the 97’s and I also have a Weber kit ready to put on, but what I’m asking is if someone had tried a Carter or had history with it and so forth.

I do not know the cfm specs for the Weber either, just that most speak highly of them so long as they are jetted up properly for the A.

Rebuilding a Carter W-1 for a club member who has a '32 Chevrolet Roadster. I found all the parts I needed at Mike's Carburetor: https://www.carburetor-parts.com
The W-1 has 4 fuel circuits and 10 cleanout plugs. Unless you know the carburetor is good, I would remove everything from the cast iron base and clean all the passages. Too much of a chance for rust in those passages if the carburetor has been laying around unused. Good luck.

When we got our A, 43 years ago, it had a Carter W1 scabbed onto it. The car ran very good despite the atrocious, farmer made, manifold built for it. thecarburetorshop.com is a good source of info on the W1 but their site is a little hard to navigate so here's the link to the W1 info

Currently my A has used engine in it with the stock Zenith, while I rebuild the engine that was in it when we got it.

In the near future I plan on doing some testing (data logging) of various engine parameters using different setups. I'll probably put the W1 on for some of this testing but probably NOT use that manifold, instead I'll adapt it to a Weber manifold.

haha, yeah that manifold is something, farmers just get it done! thanks for the pictures, very interesting and I didn't even think of simply extending the throttle bracket down.
