36 door handle

New door handle on my restored 36 went in and nicked the paint on front door..There seems to be a stop on these handles that will not allow them to be pushed in against the door..So do I need to get a new handle or is there a way to remwdy this..First mark on my restored 36 5 wdw SAD

Hello, look on the bright side : you now don't have to worry about the first "nick". I went through this with a frame-off on a Corvette about 10 years ago, and now I feel I can drive it anywhere.

When installing the handles there is a gasket between the surround and the body. Once the handle is put in at 45 degrees the chevon/escutcheon can be installed with two screws and gasket (made my own). When in doubt tape off the area on new paint. or tape it off when you know it's good.

I would suspect that your "new" door handle is not quite right. I prefer original equipment which are S/S in lieu of some other metal.. The 36-37 style of handles are quite common.
There is over 3/8" clearance between a stock handle and the door.

These have 3/8 to1/2 inch clearance but one did not stop at that and went all the way to the door skin..i would prefer original but find them...Maybe I better heave this one

Heave or other. If your issue is scratching paint and you are installing stuff. Tape it off. 3m or other. There is quite a bit of movement once you get pasted the regulator set.

sucks this happened for you! your pain is real......

Re: 36 door handle

Reviewing the EFV8 Restoration book I noted that the exterior handles for the 3 win cpe, roadster and conv's differ from the 5 win cpe and sedans. It could be that the main difference is that the open cars and 3 win cpe have chrome handles where-as the 5 window, etc have stainless handles.
The escutcheon, mounting, plate on the door handle is affixed to the handle, therefore the handle should not go into the door to far. Is it possible that you inserted the handle into the door on an angle, making contact with the door skin prior to the shaft engaging the inner lock set.
FYI, the square shafts on the spare 36 handles I have in my parts stash, extend 3-1/8" beyond the escutcheon.
