1938 Ford Woody Station Wagon I am building a 1938 Ford Woody Wagon. Trying to figure out how the antenna assembly on the inside looks. Can someone that has one of these take a picture of the plate that bolts to the header on the inside and send it to me? Thank you in advance.

Re: 1938 Ford Woody Station Wagon You mean the attachment to the radio or to the fender? I put the antenna under the running board on my 36 to hide it.

Re: 1938 Ford Woody Station Wagon I would think the old "Chicken wire" in between top insulation and under the top fabric would be a slick and viable option??? Just like many use in the early sedans!!!!

Re: 1938 Ford Woody Station Wagon It is where the knob on the interior header mounts that controls the antenna up and down function.

Re: 1938 Ford Woody Station Wagon I reproduced these a few years ago and no longer have any but I think I have a picture. I will post again after looking through my stuff. It is more complicated then it looks as the back of it has the bevel of the header, both across and at the very top a little of it bevels back and the hole has to be at the right angle to come out in the right spot. I made these out of cast stainless that could be polished so no chroming would be needed.
Update, click on my avatar and look through my 40 woodie picturs and there is one that you can see most of 1/2 of the bracket you seek. I am sure 38-40 would use the same one as that part of the cowl was the same. |
Re: 1938 Ford Woody Station Wagon "Chicken wire" is not an option with a station wagon. The top material attaches over the roof slats, so the 'chicken wire" wood be visible. I think the interior knob, located between the visors twists, to raise the antenna from it's stored position between the exterior two sections of the windshield. If I'm not mistaken it had to be extended by hand. Any '38 owners?

Re: 1938 Ford Woody Station Wagon On Nick Alexander's unrestored 40 woodie with original top there was nothing between the slats and the underside of the top material. I looked at and discussed this with him at the Grand National Meet in Tahoe, before I put the top on my car. Not sure about 38 but nothing there for sure in 40.

Re: 1938 Ford Woody Station Wagon No, the top is simply for the lack of a better description, a rubberized canvas covering that goes over the wood roof slats. There is no padding.

Re: 1938 Ford Woody Station Wagon What I am looking for is the antenna mounting on the metal part of the header inside.

Re: 1938 Ford Woody Station Wagon 2 Attachment(s)
attached are some pictures of what I made to do the same thing. fabricated out of SS and tig welded together. not perfect but I did not have any pattern other than the factory holes

Re: 1938 Ford Woody Station Wagon 38, I have searched the V-8 Clubs, magazine data base and looked thru about a dozen or so "Woodie" books that I have. I can't find any pictures of the '38 radio antenna knob, etc. The best I can do is a picture of a '38 with the antenna in the down position, between the two windshields. At this point you are probably going to ether fabricate one as Alan has or keep trying to locate one. Perhaps a trip to the Ford Archives will produce a blueprint. I'll keep looking. If you belong to the V-8 Club and the NWC, perhaps a want add.

Re: 1938 Ford Woody Station Wagon Maybe make it like the 40 wagon. The kits are sold by Carpenter & Drake with installation instructions. Should be the same roof line or close.

Re: 1938 Ford Woody Station Wagon The Early Ford Store in San Dimas, CA, also has the kit for the 1940, but it is different than the '38.

Re: 1938 Ford Woody Station Wagon Thanks guys. I found a guy that can cast one for me based on photos online.

Re: 1938 Ford Woody Station Wagon Have a look at page 125 of the 1928-1938 Automotive Hardware and Trimming Supplies.
It is available as a reprint. 1937/38 Windshield header dowel center bracket PN 78 - 711288. Suits 81A - 760 Could be the one you need. According to the 1939/40 Body Parts List book, it is used on 1939 convertibles also. Just to add to the confusion, there is another slightly different one for 1939, PN 91A - 18892, not mentioned in that book. Regards, Chris.NZ. |
