Deluxe Model A Pickups...
 

Were all assembled Model A "Deluxe" Pickups assembled with either a Closed Cab and/or Open Cabs or just Closed Cabs?

I'm trying to find pictures I have of an un-restored deluxe pickup but don't seem to have them on this computer. The way the bed sides attached to the cab required some special mounting/wood inside the cab. So I'm not sure if it would be possible to do that with an open cab.

Additionally I have never seen a deluxe open cab pickup. Neither era photos nor current ones. Nor have I ever seen an open cab AA Service Car which used a similarly styled bed.

I've never seen an open Deluxe.
It seems contrary to the marketing strategy of 'open' v. 'closed'.

There are only 26 66A pickups still known to exist, of the 293 built and about half of those are in running condition. To my knowledge there are no open cabs. I was told all assembly plants did assemble a 66A. The one I had was assembled in Richmond, Ca.

Thanks fordfarm...actually there were 295 built in 1931 and 55 built in 1932 (all Model A's) and you are correct...at least one or more was built in every domestic (USA) assembly plant with the Edgewater plant assembling 38 in 1931. You had one of the 4 that was assembled in Richmond in 1931 OR one of the 2 that was assembled in 1932!

Here is a 'Deluxed' open cab, don't know any other details.

Pluck do your figures include those assembled in the U.S.S.R. as per pic?

Several years ago, someone reproduced some of the Deluxe Pickup beds, I think in fiberglass, but I don't know the quantity. Some of those reproduction beds ended up mated to Open Cab Pickups.

The Australian Ute looked very similar and had an open cab ,

First I have heard of deluxe pickups, being a 28/29 model A fellow with a mid 29 CCPU. They look kind of cool - more modern. Were they only manufactured in 1931?

The Australian utes were not made by Ford Geelong, but by a body manufacturer in Ballarat under contract, from memory, and then sold through Ford agencies. The bodies are wood from the rear of the doors back, including the subframes. The sides, rear of the cab and tailgate are clad in metal, but not the top pieces of the tray, the bits that make it either a flare side or well side. The sides are made from 3/4 inch mountain ash, and supported by 3, 3/8 inch by 1 1/2 inch metal strips shaped to the sides of the tray, checked into the wood, between the wood and the steel cladding. The floor of the tray is also made from 3/4 inch mountain ash.

Many years ago Mac McDaniel in Atlanta converted a 31 Ute from right hand drive to left hand drive. I was yellow like the first picture. He gave it to his daughter who lived in California at the time, so it is out there someplace.

Interesting thread.
What do you think of this example? Hard to tell from the photos (and with all the wood stuff attached to the bed) if it is a Deluxe Pickup or just a creation. If it is the real deal, it's a good deal. If this is a real deal, it's got to be one of the few unrestored examples in existence.

Like Dale above, I too knew R.t. McDaniel, and he had remarked that all domestic production 66A's were closed cab units, and the only open cab units were foreign produced.
