Do i need to pull the engine out of my 40 to replace the camshaft timing gear? Also are there different types of gears that can be used? Any good tips also would be helpful. Thanks.

I think most replace the fiber ones with aluminum. You can remove the front cover for access to the cam gear. I would try to get the marks lined up so that when you replace the gear, you can just match them up. I think you can do the job with the engine in the car but may need to remove the radiator for access.

Removal of the radiator first will save you some labor later, and will give added assurance of not making a mistake. You not only have the gear to line up, but the cover has the rope seal on top, so you need to allign it correctly. Not a big deal, but visibility is critical to do it right.

Once the cover is off, wrench the engine over till the timing marks align before removing the old gear. This will help in aligning the new gear.

Engine quit on the highway. Got it home and checked fuel pump and found pump push rod not moving,also no spark.Removed dist. turned engine over and cam shaft not rotating. seems like 1/4 to 1/2 in. backlash in gears. So i'm asuming i lost some teeth.

I see what you mean Jay. I hope you have a bolt on cam gear, most stock engines in the 30's had a press n gear, there pretty hard to replace with the cam in the engine. Walt

I had a fiber press-on timing gear fail on a rebuilt '35 221, 21 stud engine two years ago on my way to Hershey. Engine stopped running just like I had turned the ignition key off. I removed the radiator and the grille because I was planning to do other work at the front of the engine. I removed the failed fiber gear and installed a new aluminum gear with the cam in the engine.

If you have a press on gear, I dought you will on a 40. Use a aluminun gear going back. Pre heat the gear real hot with a propane torch. It will go right up on the cam easy.Let it cool. Make sure you wear a pair of gloves when you pick it up to install. Line up your marks. You have to move quick from the heat to the cam.
