Re: Adjustable drag link I see a lot of people asking about adjustable drag links, but I still can't see why they are needed. The steering wheel was not centered when the car was built new,so why does it need to be centered now? Ford put two keyways in the wheel when it was made, and the service bulletins tell you to pull the wheel off and install using the other keyway if a spoke blocks the speedo.I have four A's sitting here right now that we are looking at.Two have shortened pitman arms and the arms on both hang down perfectly straight. On the two cars with stock arms one hangs down a little to the front, and the other a little to the rear.I know in theory the change in a short pitman arm comes out to be in thousandths, but does it make any real life difference in driving? With a bunch of other steering modifications I can see it being needed, but is it needed on a stock A?

Re: Adjustable drag link I agree with Keith, and don't see a real need for one.
I'm thinking of buying the short pitman arm, mainly to take some load off the tank bracket. |
Re: Adjustable drag link I think the problem is the steering gear is adjusted and the play is taken out in the
centered position and when using the shortened pitman arm the gear is not in the centered position when driving down the road. You need the adjustable drag link to correct this. Clear as mud? Bob |
Re: Adjustable drag link Bob C is correct, it really shows up if you have a 7 tooth steering box, I have posted about this several times with along with a picture, It really needs to be shown with a schematic drawing to see what is effected, to add vision to the subject someday I will do this.

Re: Adjustable drag link I think they offer the adjustable drag link is to appease the anal-retentive ones in the group. :p:p

Haven't seen a vendor offered one. You can make your own as I did. To make one, you do need the die that makes the thread that you do not have. Example, if you have used/or new tie rod, cut it to length needed. You will have two halves. Each end needs right and left hand thread. I bought the left hand thread die. If seems that the right hand thread die is cheaper and more available. You can make the drag link with an 'adjuster' in the middle also...easier to adjust , IMO. |
Re: Adjustable drag link 2 Attachment(s)

Re: Adjustable drag link I have a 1930 tudor with a shortened pitman arm, the spoke stayed right in middle. I hadn't thought about the benefit of less pressure on the tank bracket. It does steer easier. I have CCPU and the spoke space is in middle, thought maybe it was a car-truck thing.

Re: Adjustable drag link A brand new short Right Hand drive pitman arm is available from Arizona Model A for those in the other 1/2 of the world, & Antique Ford Parts IN NZ.

Re: Adjustable drag link I have two A's with the shorter pitman arms. Not modified originals but the shorter ones sold by Snyder's and Bratton's. Neither is because I am too lazy to turn the wheel. Both are because I have arthritis and it hurts my hands to drive with the longer arm. this is just enough relief that I can drive all day without ending up in agony. Doesn't affect the turning radius at all, as the nut on the kingpin locking bolt is still your limiting factor, though it takes a little more turning to get there. Works for me, not for purists.
