I.D. Tag
 

I bought a new I.D. tag for my firewall. 78-XXXXXX You have to stamp the number on it. My question is, do you put the frame number on it? Or the number on the title. Also does anyone do this for Ford Barners? Thanks Bruce

I suspect you have a body number tag ---78-XXX-for body type, then XXxx for the bodys number in the series ---Ford built bodys usually didjn't have them

the frame, trans # should be on the title

Neither of those numbers would be correct.

Those body tags reflect the body number built by the non Ford body builder (Briggs, Murray, etc). Bodies manufactured by Ford do not have a body tag number.

My Ford transmission/frame number is 3514381, but my body number is #3798. My tag indicates that my Fordor De Luxe is the 3798 th body completed by the non Ford Body maker (I think this is a Murray tag since it resembles the examples by Murray on Model A cars).

Question, why would you put an ID tag on the firewall unless it had one originally? If it had one, would the number be on it? I'm confused.

I would think the frame number should match the title, unless your state assigned its own vin to the car, NYS does this for home built or kit cars.

Many times the tag is missing , but the holes are still there where it was riveted to the firewall. Guys want a tag to make it look authentic.

Not that many vechiles had them (would just be the bodies not built by Ford) and in most cases how would you know who did build the body or what number it was? I just don't see the point.

There probably IS a point here that becomes obvious when you read the original post again. The OP asked whether you put the FRAME number on the tag, or the TITLE number on the tag. This sounds like the frequently-heard story of an inexperienced old car buyer, where the buyer is given a TITLE for the car which has a non-matching frame (ID) number. Still new to the logistics of old car registration, the purchaser believes (or has been told) that you can "JUST PUT THE TITLE NUMBER ON THE TAG", or similar BS story. I sincerely hope that my reasoning is wrong, for the sake of the original poster trying to PROPERLY register his car with the DMV. DD

I am a newbie here, but just thought I would mention that early Fords had a tag on the firewall listing various patents associated with the vehicle but from what I recall the original tags did not include any specific body or frame numbers. Please correct me if I am wrong.

Do all bodies have tags? Or do some have holes and no tags? I stripped my car and don't remember taking the tag off. I did have the patent tag. Now I'm confused. Bruce.

Big Shark, Your tudor sedan should not have a body number tag but most bodies had the two tiny holes for a tag. Don't put one on it because it never had a BODY NUMBER allocated to it. It may have the patent number plate on it which has four tiny mounting holes for the rivets. As stated some body types were not built by Ford Motor Company but by suppliers such as Briggs or Murray and only these had a body number and a tag affixed to them. Engine numbers (which most USA cars don't have stamped in) Chassis numbers and transmission bell housing numbers which were all matching when the car was built DO NOT show on any body tags or plates. I can only relate to what is correct for a '36 Ford, because that is what I have. Throughout the years that I have owned my Ford, over sixty-five years, the subject of a Body Number not being on the firewall has come up. The paint on my firewall is the original black paint that Ford put on it. If someone had removed the Body Plate prior to me purchasing the car in 1952, I have no Idea why that would have happened. I have looked many times for indications that there were holes for the Body Plate, never found any.
Many years ago I purchased the '35-36 Ford Book, reading through it I found that only bodies that were out sourced from vendors had a Body Number, AHA mystery solved, there ain't any holes, because there never was a Body Plate on the car.
