Re: bendix

It's a facet 480400 but the number has been superseded a number of times. Accurate number is 3-121F (rebuilt) and 4-121F (new).
Buy it from the Model A suppliers as the have reasonable prices.

If from a tractor store ask that it is a folo-tru drive (Barrel) as the old spring drive and newer style share the same part number.

This from Snyders:

A modern style starter drive that is a direct replacement for the original style. More reliable and perfect for 5/8" shafts for withstanding 12 volt applications. NOW U.S. Made!
Part Number Specifics Price
A-11350 M1928-34 $38.95 / ea.

Looks like they are for international tractors http://www.tractorpartsasap.com/Star...s-p/112575.htm
Amazon also has them http://www.amazon.com/Rubber-Cushion.../dp/B0081SBTNU

I also use the barrel drive from Snyders. I see that the price for this part has increased by forteen dollars in their newest catalog. The same part was only $24.95 in their 2013 catalog. I just got my new 2014 Brattons catalog today. Brattons listed price for the barrel drive is only $22.30 . The part number for the barrel drive in Brattons catalog is 15961. Brattons has their own part numbering system and may be the same part that Snyders offers. Many times when you order a part you will find that the price is higher than the listed price in the catalog . Its always best and less expensive to buy model A parts from a model A vender than any local source. I was kinda shocked to see the large price jump for this part in Snyders and expect prices to increase across the board.

Re: bendix

Purdy I think it went up because it is now made in USA; prolly better quality.
Brattons used to use the Ford PN numbering system but for some bizarre reason they got a nastygram from a Ford lawyer that made them change. Comparing to other suppliers I don't see that anyone else had to drop the Ford numbers.

From what I heard the others are paying Ford a fee for using the Ford numbering system.

Tbird, you are probably correct. I've been using the barrel drive from Snyders for eight years with no problems. It just seems that a near 50% increase is kinda getting up there. Tom is right about other vendors having to pay Ford Motor Company to use the original part numbering system. It seemed a bit nitty to me!!!

Yup, but I'm not in the 'law suit' biz , so not posting that,eh:D.

BTW...Yeah, I've been running this piece of equipment for 10 years now and it was cheaper then....guess why....well shipping is killing us all, including sellers :(!! Get a $5 part and shipping these days is 3x that price...

Re: bendix

yeah, about every 2 years my bendix breaks .i went to portland swap meet . i had a big list, got pretty much every thing but the barrel bendix. Floyd's never had one . Rod's ford parts 32 to 48 had one but he said it would not fit model A . talk about shipping to canada , $24 part ,weight under 1 pound and small cost me $78 last month

Why did the original Bendix keep breaking? Did you change to 12 volts?
Certain Bendix springs need the shims under the end coil, and if they are missing it is more likely to fail at the bolts.

I've never had any trouble with an original Bendix and 6 volts.

Tom,

I have (am having) Bendix issues on my 28. Can you give more info on the shims?

Here's a link to one that was on ebay, but you will get a better buy from Bratton's or another parts house that has them.

Re: bendix

Tom, I don't follow this either.
"Certain Bendix springs"

can you elaborate...

Re: bendix

We sell that bendix and ship them in the USA for $5.75. We have found many more ways to use the USPS $5.75 flat rate boxes and padded envelopes and can and do ship now using new software to utilize that inexpensive shipping option for more items.

If you look at the last half coil on each end of the Bendix spring, it will be the same diameter as the rest of the coils, or it will be a reduced diameter. If it's the reduced diameter, then you don't use the shims, but if it's the same diameter then it will be a loose fit on the pinion drive and should have the shims.

The information is also in the Service Bulletins.

Re: bendix

yeah i change to 12 volts . once the spring broke ,once the bolt broke and just last week the end broke off right where the threads start. thats all in 12 thousand miles

Re: bendix

Can you use the drive from a newer 390 Ford starter? I have one, I have not yet seen the one on my truck. I am expecting the worst when I pull the starter out.

Re: bendix

If running 12 volts, use the Bendix with 3/8 diameter bolts that I think were on the V8 Ford. The Model A's Bendix has 5/16 diameter bolts that will not survive.
