Replating Gear Shift Lever I want to get two gesr shift levers replated but they are kind of rusty and I want to clean it. I don't think blasting is the best option.

Re: Replating Gear Shift Lever Use a chemical rust remover such as Evapo-rust or Rust911 first. Then either remove the remaining plating electronically or let the plater do it. It is very easy to ruin a gear shift lever if it has much pitting, or needs much buffing. It is hard for them to keep the stick from becoming wavy.

Re: Replating Gear Shift Lever I used a belt sander on my 2 levers before getting them nickel plated.
As Brent said, it's real easy to make them look wavy, so use lots of care. |
Re: Replating Gear Shift Lever The bell shaped cover at the bottom has to fit the stick. If you grind too much off there it will flop around. A good platter can build up the pits with copper plate and grind it down.

Re: Replating Gear Shift Lever wire wheel on a drill press or bench grinder does wonders and doesnt take off material like a sander. puts a nice finish on as well. i do this with my hand planes when i restore them.
