A "C" clip fits into a groove in the handle behind the dash.

As I remember the shaft is splined and the handle just slides on to the crank. The clip holds the handle in the dash. So technically the dash is what holds the handle on to the crank shaft.

That compares to what I have in my 37. The washer and clip I used are not original
