Early Mitchell?
 

Picked up a Mitchell today, along with a complete chassis from a burned 31 coupe.My question is can you tell the ratio from the serial number? It sold in may of 2000, SN# 5 00 10170

Got to get it home and figure the rear end ratio before I do anything. Thought maybe someone knew from the sn#..

Oh no, is the coupe another tragedy from the recent CA fires?

No, believe it or not, a fireman's house burnt down..he lost the coupe, a '26 T touring and a Harley Davidson bagger..what I learned about burned cars is heat travels up..the mitchell looks perfect,there is still paint on the frame rails..but the body is toast...literally. cut it off yesterday had to be easy or it would have folded like a taco on the lift..

Spoke with Sue Mitchell yesterday, she couldn't be sure, she said most of them built back then were 26%.They stamped a 36 under the serial number to indicate 36% if so equipped.

Whats interesting is she was in the same club as the deceased builder of this car, knew him well. She said he was a 'model a guru'...adds interest to getting his chassis, I already noticed a bunch of upgrades when I looked at it last week, the big gamble is if the block has inserts..either way, I made out with the mitchell.. but I like whipped cream and a cherry on my ice cream..

The chassis turned out to be much better than I thought it would be. The previous owner did some nice stuff..54 Ford pickup steering box, professionally built brakes with cast iron drums.oil filter, float a motor, spring shackles, the mitchell...he told me he thinks the engine has insert bearings,going to pull the pan and check..the entire front end from the radius ball forward it straight and tight.Saved me a bunch of money and time..
