Throttle/stalling issues
 

Good morning. Recently my 1931 Roadster developed an issue with the throttle. If you think of the throttle lever going from 1:00 to 5:00 on a clock face, then when the engine is warmed up, if I move the lever from 1:00 to about 3:00, there is no change in idle speed. If I try to drive at this setting, the engine will stall when I accelerate from a stop. Moving the lever from 3:00 to 5:00 gives me an increasing idle speed as normal. It's like the low idle has quit. The rod connecting the assembly is not bent (as one person suggested), and the lever itself moves as smoothly as it ever has.

I like to drive the car with the idle set pretty low, but I simply can't set it on the low side any more. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks in advance!

Watch the throttle lever on the carb while someone else moves the throttle lever. Should be simple to fix. Make sure everything is tight around the carb. Good luck.

Jacksonlll - I'm quite new to all of this. Are you thinking that there's something sticking on the carb, and if someone else moves the lever, I should be able to see it sticking, and then either oil or grease it? That's what I'm supposing. Thanks!

Benson - No, the engine has not been removed. And this issue just sort of started out of the blue. Up until that time, the idle and the car were in great shape. Thanks!

Several ideas.
Intake manifold gasket, carb to manifold gasket, worn throttle shaft, dirty carb.,

The hand throttle does control the idle etc. the carb does. Sounds like you should start with taking carb apart and blowing out jets. Especially the idle port and the cap jet. If you disconnect the gas line and turn on the tank valve, do you get a good and clean flow? Use a clear container.

Just watch and see if the mechanism moves the throttle blade. Something maybe broken or a pin sheared at the base of the rod. It’s all simple. Just watch everything work.

make sure your steering column is indexed correctly

Maybe not part of the problem but be sure to put a couple of drops of oil into the tower that support the throttle shaft as it passes behind the engine each time you lube the vehicle. See attached photo of passenger side tower.

Not reading that there is an issue with the linkage. I think what Bob suggest is where I would look too.

It sounds like it is running too lean . I would do what chuck in post number 7 says . it could be a blockage in a jet or a passage that is causing the problem .
