on 40 Ford dash which is the early dash and late dash?
push up or pull out?

Push-in is early; pullout is late.

Not earth shaking but,I couldn't resist showing off the only 1020 mild steel ash tray chrome in the whole world. Made by hand before the repro stuff was available.
Ash tray is early style push in and up.
