Drum / hub retainer Hi guys Is any one making the old style weld / bolt on rear drum retainer . I’m running original brakes on a 34 ? .The little bolt on brackets won’t work . I guess I could make up some that would bolt to the backing plate. Any thoughts ?

Re: Drum / hub retainer I don't believe that the old style weld / bolt on rear drum retainer will fit over the drum as the wheel bearings bearings were larger in '34 (I think through '36). I am running what you are talking about with my '40 brakes in a '32. Please post your solution as I also have a stock '32 and a Model A that would be candidates.
Maybe an ad in the "wanted" section would turn up an old set. Charlie Stephens |
Re: Drum / hub retainer 1 Attachment(s)
This can some what easily be replicated with a few steel rings and short pieces of tubing. I wish I had photos handy to show examples. But if you can find the later design it should make sense. Just change to the larger early dimensions.
here is a simple drawing... |

While original safety hubs turn up from time to time on the auction place; @SUHRsc idea in the previous post looks good and not too tough to make.

Re: Drum / hub retainer Thanks for you replies , Charlie yes I need to do my Model A as well , SUHRsc I like your idea , I don’t have access to lathe at the moment , will definitely go that way in the future . I have decided to to go the bolt on bracket way , with a slightly different bend in the bracket they will fit the 34 and Model A. Will post some photos when finished .

Re: Drum / hub retainer Be sure to carefully paint a little warning on your brake drums to let folks know your using
those style safety hubs. You never know whose going to be working on your car. |
Re: Drum / hub retainer 7 Attachment(s)
One side done , one to go , then the Model A

Re: Drum / hub retainer Neat job.

Re: Drum / hub retainer Excellent work. Nice and beefy and strong. I like the way your
"curved" it. |
Re: Drum / hub retainer Other side all done . Took it for a drive , slight contact on one side , had to remove it and give it a touch up with the angle grinder. All good now. I think these retainers should be mandatory on our old Fords

Re: Drum / hub retainer Hey it's still the land of the free-ish, but if you want your wheel to flyoff your free to do that! :) (You'd have to break an axle, not sure how often it happens. but I run them).
Nice work!!! . |
