Exhaust manifold torque spec

I am replacing the exhaust manifold gasket. What is the torque spec?

The book says 45 ft #, but I don’t go quite that high.

Thank you!

If you use the brass hexa, than torque only 50 %.

I used the copper ones from Bert's!

Easy to break a manifold. Torque progressively and evenly.

I don't think that Ford listed torque specs . I only tighten model A manifolds with a three eight ratchet and a six point socket and common sense . The shorter handle on a three eights ratchet is usually a good bit shorter than a one half inch drive ratchet or pull handle and should reduce the risk of over tightening . After the engine goes through a heat and cool cycle , retighten .

ive heard 35-55. 45 is what I do. 75-100 will crack the manifold. both at one time if your real lucky.

Bratton's states 25 to 30 lb

Better safe than sorry

The human body is amazing,Ford mechanics were taught 'feel',torque wrenches were not used. Skills were imparted,a journeyman would guide an apprentice, much as it is today.

The human body is amazing? yes sir, once a feel for the tension on an assembly is developed, its truly amazing how the brain and body work together to duplicate the same 'feel' I've actually seen the results against a torque wrench, once you have a feel for a value repeat it a few times and test it with a torque wrench, you'll be surprised.

I've also seen great consistency between a mechanic and his air operated impact wrench..know some cats who swore by a butterfly, they could nail an assembly.Flat rate specialists, real fast operators..

I went to #35 with no issues. I retorque periodically.

Fifty five foot pounds is usually a safe torque for heads and manifolds , if you prefer to use a torque wrench .

25-35# is best. retorque a few times and save your manifold.

Make sure the washers are on correctly! One hand torque re torque after heat cycles.

How important is it to use the correct concave manifold washers?

Purdy Swoft 10-25-2019 04:11 PM

Most important !!!

Tight enough but not too tight, just like in the days when the car was built.
