Generator mounting questions

Hi All,
Im changing my 8BA to look like a 59AB. I want to mount my generator on the drivers side head rather than the intake. #1 Can I swap the front end plate and mount from an early gen to my 8BA generator? #2 If I do this will the belts line up using an Offy head mount generator bracket?
Thanks,
Guy

Re: Generator mounting questions

People do 12 volt conversions using a 56 up generator married to a 59 A type generator front plate. I have mixed parts from early 60's econoline generator and 8BA generator, the front stuff swaps fine. Based on this I'd say your good to go.
Belts lining up,
I guess as your "59A ing" an 8BA your gonna use 59A water pumps? If so the generator pulley on the offy offset mount should line straight up with a 59A type bottom pulley (the inner sheave) and water pumps.
Should all go together, let us know how it goes.
Martin.

Re: Generator mounting questions

Thanks Martin. I am using the 8BA truck pumps so I'm thinking the belts won't line up. I forgot that the 59AB pulleys are closer to the block. I guess I'll have to use a intake mounted bracket. Or make my own bracket.

Re: Generator mounting questions

If you can weld aluminum you could modify the OFFY bracket as needed.

I can weld aluminum. To be honest I never considered modifying the Offy bracket, just making something from scratch. To use the Offy bracket would mean adding 1-1/2 inch or so to the mounting pad. Something to consider.....

Give it a try. I am sure it would be worth the effort and would get folks to wonder: "How come that bracket fits?" I modified the alum. bracket for my alternator to make it sit a lot lower 16 years ago. It's the only one in the whole wide world.

I agree. A generator looks much better. Would love to get one of those generators that look like an alternator.
