35 tailite stand differences
 

Working on my 35 touring sedan, looking thru boxes of extra parts, I noticed that I have 3 different length tailite stands. One is short at less than 8” long, the second is around 10 3/4” and the third is 11 3/4”. The long ones are on my trunk back sedan and push the license plate back enough to clear the bustle. What are the other lengths for. I’m especially interested in the short ones. Thanks

It looks like the first two are 1935. Touring sedan (11 3/4")...slant back sedan or coupe (8") The last two appear to be 1936 sedan or coupe.

In my Coupe .
I originally only had the one on the left but I found one to match for the right. Less than 8 inches say 7-1/2”

Bill, The long right side one exists but hard to find.This is on a German bodied Conv Sedan (not attractive IMO).Seen them on USA cars also.Sheldon

Sheldon. Really interesting that your pic shows the German convertible sedan
with suicide front doors as my 35 convertible sedan front doors aren't suicide.

Yes Peter they were custom bodies and in 2 dr configuration.I think this is a Kellner body. The guy want to sell it cheap but it would cost a fortune to do it right.

A view from the side shows all to be 35. So what would the shorter long ones be..under 11 inches?

The three in the middle appear to be 1936!! One on bottom ...1935 coupe..roadster...sedan..phaeton...conv. sedan. One on top appears to be touring sedan (trunk back)

Interesting to see them side by side. Looks like the angle at which the gas fill pipe comes through on the 36 is closer to 90’ from the mounting surface than the 35’s are. If I am seeing it correctly, Due to fender differences I guess.

Agree with Don Rogers, the top and bottom ones are 35, the middle 3 are 1936.
Ford for some reason used 2 lengths. The LHD cars had a long one on the drivers side and a short one on the passenger side. On RHD cars they are the other way around. That is why long ones for the passenger side are scarce in the USA, they were only fitted to RHD export cars.

You are correct, the tail section of a 36 fender has a crown / convex to it while a 35 fender has a dip / concave tail where the stands bolt on.

Viv...The long tail light stand was used on touring sedans only so that the license plate would clear the trunk bulge (not an issue with slant backs and coupes). Most vehicles had the license plate on the drivers side of the car. Therefore LHD vehicles had the plate on the left side while RHD vehicles had the plate on the right side.
