Chris,

Perhaps of greater interest in that auction would the counterbalanced crankshaft already ground and ready to go.

Thanks folks,
Yes the item looks interesting for sure. Will have to check that out too.
Cant keep up world is spinning too fast!:)
We took three tractors to the antique pulls last night. Two fifth place ribbons with the WD and WD45. Lots of good competition there, with 12-15 tractors per class!

Will pick up my bored B block today. it is complete. Maybe the rest of the story later!

Our local Albion Fair starts Monday with entries so we will be busy with that too.

Hope to spend a little time on the 32 truck also. I did see the seats and they are going to look good in the Tuxedo Blue material.

A glimpse of the museum at Snyder's! Just awesome collection!:

Wow, a 1932 3 window with a Diesel engine! Looks like a Cummins 4BT with a Bosch P7100 injection pump. You don't see one of those every day.

Zeke,
The 32 3 window with the Cummins BT is a really nice car!

Ford Folks,
Update on my 32 as things move in normal for me, fits and starts:
Stopped by the upholstery shop and the seat back is done. The base on the passengers side was started and he wanted me to do a trial to see how the bottom would fit and tuck in to the gas tank:
https://i.imgur.com/l0GKh7A.jpg

I think this is going to look just fine! Not too much bling here. The tuxedo Blue would not have been what Ford used. Probably would have been basic black. I thought this would compliment the faded Washington blue of the cab.:
https://i.imgur.com/Abn7zcO.jpg

Seat base went back to the shop to finish. No big problem getting the base to fit between the seat back and the tank. And they seem to be tight enough a cell phone wont slip between them.

Picked up the engine block today:
https://i.imgur.com/PN5tXXN.jpg
He said the rig gap was just about .008 over spec on one bore. other three bores were about .012 inches of gap.

Yesterday I cleaned up the exterior and interior of the transmission and the oil pan:

Some of the parts in Queue. Yes some paint has been applied to make it look a little better. The green that was on this head did not appeal to me. So we have some flat black primer applied.

Guys,
Got to keep hitting at this stuff. Nothing seems to happen when I am on the couch!:)
I did get those holes plugged in the block all 4 of them!
5 tractors at the local fair. Will try to get some pictures too. Will pull Friday morning on cement, Friday Evening Farm Stock, and Saturday Antique tractor pull.

Re: 1932 The Deuce, Dually, Dump Truck

The Barn folks,
Little moves:
https://i.imgur.com/0RYKpwR.jpg

With those pistons shoved in there she turns over much harder!

Ok On the valves I set the gap cold at around .014 inch. Found the specs to day of course, and it says .010 to .012. Should I go back through and reset them? Just won't be as easy to roll the engine over now! So I am about .002 over spec, what do you think? Take the time to reset of just keep going? I think they are WAY better than when I took the engine apart! Some were .040 gap!:)

Head studs (new) are now in. Found another hole that was bad. Had to drill tap and heil-coil that hole too. Have used almost a pack of 7/16 heli-coils on this old block.

Got the pressure plate and flywheel back from the machine shop. Some hard spots in both. But very flat and true. Much better that prior. 90 year old cast material has issues!

I did realize that the clutch that was in the truck at 9-1/2 inch diameter had a bigger spline diameter (hub) than the one that came from engine #2, which probably was in a car and had the smaller 9 inch clutch.
Anyone have a place to get a 9-1/2 inch clutch at some point? I may just reuse this old clutch as it is not in bad shape. Just now new. But a lot of things in life are not new and still function ok.

I believe I could install the head and gasket at this time too. Got the torque specs, 35, 45 then 55 in a pattern. Hope I can get it over the new studs!:)

Need to take the oil pump apart and inspect. At 2-3 lbs of pressure required, I am hoping it is good enough to clean and use as is?

The pan gasket may be a challenge? How do folks hold this engine on a stand with the rear intermediate casting in place? I want to do the pan gasket with the engine and intermediate flywheel cover in place, upside down. I am going to use the casting that has the truck serial numbers on it. Just in case this becomes the engine that stays in the truck a while!:)

Off to the fair again today, Cheryl and I stayed overnight in the camper there last night. It rained and had a great Thunder and lighting show about 10:00!

Maybe get some quality time on the 32 engine also today? Don't be afraid to remind me to do something important on the B engine rebuild!!

Regards,
Chris

51504bat,
Thanks for the link! I may need them.

Swapped the rods out today for the ones that went with this crank. The other rods locked the engine up tight. That took most of the day.

Copper coated the head gasket, and torqued the head to specs.

Sausage sandwich and grilled half chicken at the fair today!:)

Re: 1932 The Deuce, Dually, Dump Truck

Chris,

You really don't have a choice about the upper flywheel housing as it is attached to the block behind where the flywheel goes and you cannot install the flywheel after you install the oil pan as the combined opening at the rear of the flywheel housing and oil pan is too small to add the flywheel once the pan and flywheel housing are in place. I use non-hardening gasket maker to glue the pan gasket to the pan and to attach the cork band to the underside of the rear main bearing cap.

I do not use an engine stand, but rather carefully lower the engine down into the oil pan sitting on the ground or low work surface with a hydraulic engine hoist. I use a couple of long drift pins through several of the holes in the pan to line the pan up with the holes in the mating surface of the engine block.

You'll have to use the threaded hole in the side of the block near its bottom to hold the oil pump in place as the pump will not defy gravity on its own (dumb design not repeated on the V8s).

Re: 1932 The Deuce, Dually, Dump Truck

David,
You have solved some of the mystery of the oil pan installation. I would really like to do this upside down to get a good viewing of the pan gasket application, and some adhesives in correct locations. Humm? Can the engine be supported from the bolts that attach the manifolds? Would have to make an adapter for the engine stand. That way the engine could be flipped end over end , in theory?

Folks,
I have the head on, but may be tough to get off. Some of the head stud holes that I drilled were not as square as factory and they provided some challenge getting the gasket and head to be perfectly aligned. Head nuts torqued to 35 ft lbs, then 45, then final at 55 ft lbs.

A coat of flat black to somewhat clean up the block a little.
https://i.imgur.com/RgwSNud.jpg

Thinking that supporting the engine from the manifold side may work too. I am sure I am not the first one to try that concept. Maybe a couple 5/16 bolts into the valve cover gasket holes too?
https://i.imgur.com/4E7Eysz.jpg

Oil pump and water pump need my attention soon too. Yea the truck is not going to be ready for Saturday morning prime time, in the fair parade. Maybe next year?:)

Thanks for checking in on me! Will the old engine run? Stay tuned! I think it has to run, it has a big "C" on the head, for Chris!:)

Regards,
Chris

Re: 1932 The Deuce, Dually, Dump Truck

Chris,

The original K.R. Wilson engine stand adapter for four-cylinder engines did indeed support the engine block from the side (opposite to the manifold side).

Bored&Stroked 09-16-2021 09:22 AM

Re: 1932 The Deuce, Dually, Dump Truck

I'd probably made a "side mount" plate - picking up at least 4 manifold bolt holes. It would be made of 1/4" minimum steel and would go across the whole manifold area - leaving room to get to the valves if needed.

Then it would have a section of tubing/pipe welded to it that would slip into the stand. This is similar to how we do things with our V8's. In mounting the tube, I would bore a hole in the plate that the tube slips into and weld the tube in on both sides.

DavidG 09-16-2021 10:13 AM

Re: 1932 The Deuce, Dually, Dump Truck

If those head studs are new ones from Snyder's, I'll remember not to buy any from them as they are all too long by about 3/16" - 1/4". That's surprising given how fussy many Model A restorers are about such things as original fastener dimensions.
