1932 Transmission question
 

I figured I would post this so others could see the answer, if we get an answer.
I just bought this transmission that I believe is a 1932 Transmission.I know the trans top is a later top, and this looks to have a 35 to 38 gear set.
Here are the questions.
* I was told that 1932 V8 Transmissions are the only cases that have no inspection hole/cover ?
* and the numbers on the case look to be factory stamped but what is FT ? Someone told me this could mean foreign?

It's a '32 V8 case and all but very late '32 V8 transmissions lacked the inspection plate. What I see in your photo is 18F103210, not 18FT03210, with the second one being more heavily impressed at the top than at the bottom. In other words this was originally the transmission case behind the 103,210th production V8 manufactured in 1932. (Ford did not number engines beginning with zero.)

The F designated that the engine/transmission assembly was destined to be installed in a RHD chassis. So it represents 'foreign', but only if the destination of the engine/transmission assembly was a RHD country. All of the LHD 'foreign' countries' engine numbers did not include the F in the prefix.

The top/shift tower looks to be '38-'39, with provisions for double detent spring loaded balls. Having the clutch linkage arm on the right side of the cross shaft usually means it was used in a RHD vehicle.

Hi David, thank you for the info.. I can see the F103210 now and now that you pointed that out I can find the number in your book..According to your book that puts it in the Mid-year , June to August range.. this is all good info. Someone put some time into this with the later gears and the double detent shift top w/small shift forks. Fun stuff !

It's not uncommon to see them converted to later gears but it changes the appearance with the late type tower and fit in an original 1932 car. Some folks have successfully modified the forks to use the original slant back type tower but it's tricky to make the forks work properly and may weaken them if not done carefully.

never seen one with two stars stamped next to each other.

Some gear sets likely won't fit. The 15/29 set comes to mind. It looks like it was used in a later car with the round type rear mount installed.

The stamper got carried away with the stars that day. Maybe it was a monday or friday.

The harder part to find is the 32 shift tower as it had the handbrake mounting, one year only of course.
