V-8 Fords on Film

I love old black and white movies and I love Old Fords.
When I watch an old movie, I look for the old cars.

Many of us are familiar with some of the more famous Ford V-8s on the screen--John Milner's chopped 1932 Five Window Coupe (not Ford powered); the California Kid's awesome 1934 Coupe; and who can forget the 1934 Fordor used as the Bonnie and Clyde Death Car from the 1967 movie Bonnie and Clyde?

I have started a listing of Ford V-8s that appear in motion pictures. Some of the movies are pretty obscure.


1932 Ford Phaeton

The first V-8 Ford on Film for this thread is a 1932 Ford Phaeton from the 1932 Universal motion picture: If I had a Million, starring W.C. Fields and Allison Skipworth (the film is a series of short stories and the Fords can be seen in the W.C. Fields portion of the film). The W.C. Fields portion of the movie was filmed on location on California streets and at a used car dealership, so there are tons of old cars in this film.

Another Ford in the same motion picture: 1932 Model B Fordor Sedan.

Warning: there are a couple cringe-worthy moments in this film.

Bring Up Baby (1938) with Cary Grant and Katherine Hepburn has a couple of '37 Cabriolets and a woody, maybe some others that I forgot. Pretty funny comedy and the cars are a definite plus.

Hey dont forget Lumpys 40 Convertible on Leave It To Beaver and the 40 Coupe at the end of Miracle On 34th Street.

I'm having a senior moment- There was a movie, somewhat a take off on It's a Mad Mad Mad World (which had Phil Silvers ruin a nice '48? Ford convertible), but it's later and has a Jewish family stop at the "Barbie Museum" only to find out it's the "Klaus Barbie Museum" and they escape in a '35-'36 phaeton made up as a Nazi staff car.

(I feel like the guy in the joke "Two couples are walking down the street, the husbands a few paces ahead of their wives. One husband says "We went to the movies the other night." The other replies "What did you see?" "I forget the name of the movie." "Well who was in it?" "I forget his name." "Well, what was it about?" "You know the name of the flower that has thorns on the stems?" "You mean rose?" "Yeah, that's it." He then turns and says, "Hey Rose, what was that movie we saw?")

Turns out it's Rat Race....

I love to watch old movies (or movies set in the '30s and '40s) for the cars, but I drive my wife crazy if I'm watching the movie with her because I watch for anachronisms, like a late '30s or early '40s vehicle in a movie supposedly set in 1935. Good example was Bingo Long's Traveling All Stars and Motor Kings, movie set in '35, but their '35 Ford phaeton gets towed by a '42-'47 Ford jailbar wrecker.

Made for TV movie, Murder in Coweta County, Georgia where one of the main vehicles was a green late 35 Pickup with the 36 style cab with the contoured A pillar. I should have bought that truck when I had a chance. I worked on that movie and I drove that truck several times in the movie. It was a nice old truck. That is a great movie with a lot of old cars, and depicts a true story of how a big shot in the County had basically unlimited power in those days. Andy Griffith was the bad guy and Johnny Cash was the Sheriff. Made in and around Coweta County, GA.

1947 Ford Super Deluxe Fordor Sedan V8.
The movie is Inspector 42. The scenes the car and I are in were filmed in Salt Lake City, Utah in March 2009. The movie was actually printed and shown in black and white so that it looks like an old black and white movie even though it's brand new. I just rewatched Bringing Up Baby. It is a V-8 Ford Fest.

Two 1936 Cabriolets in the country club parking lot scene and a 1937 Ford in the background.

1934 Ford Station Wagon
1937 Ford Touring Fordor
1935 Ford Phaeton
Katherine Hepburn also drives a 1934 Station Wagon in the movie. When she steals a car to avoid a ticket, a 1937 Ford Touring Fordor passes by in the background. The constable drives a 1935 Ford Phaeton.

There are several other cars of various makes in the background.

Six V-8 Fords appear in Bringing Up Baby. That's pretty good.

I was flipping through channels in the shop a couple of Saturdays ago and ran across the Bowery Boys in "Jalopy." Like old Fords? How about old Fords on a dirt track? There's lots of film footage of flathead powered circle trackers that really show how it was. Corny, as all Bowery Boys movies are, but all the footage makes it truly worth watching.
