6 blade generator mounted fan on a '32
 

I'd like to put a generator mounted 6 blade fan on my '32, I've heard one from a 8N or 9N tractor would work.

Is it a bolt on or would I have to get the right length snout?

Or is there a different 6 blade that would work?

If you are trying to increase air flow, try Speedway motors, they have a 6 blade plastic.

Here are photos of my 1948 8N fan. Its a four blade. I'm not sure the generator bearings would handle a six-blade fan? I had a hard time getting these photos After two back surgeries. I only have about 10 seconds of bending overtime before, it hurts too bad. You what it is neat is that metal fan shroud that might just be hot rod material. I never thought about it before and it is vintage Ford part. This tractor just crawls along so I bet that's why the tractors got the fan shroud.

Its about 16" across the shroud and the fan is a tight fit. I can't get a straight shot across the fan to measure it. 1 1/8" from the fan to the radiator. 4 7'8" from the back of the hub to the radiator Total length of hub and fan is 3 3/4"
That is not going to be long enough for a '32, they have a long hub.

That shroud is also a safety device. On the sides of hills around here, right before I'm about to roll it over on its side the radiator moves just enough to make the shroud start hitting the fan. That lets me know I'm at its limit and g gravity is about to take over the controls.

I had an 8N fan from eBay. It was a 6 blade. Al the dimensions were fine and it bolted on. I sold it because of the weight and I had a pretty stout flathead. It would whip at high revs.
I bought a flat plastic fan and spacer from summit. I had to make a pancake adapter to mount the fan to the hub.

There are 9N, 2N, early 8N and late 8N Ford tractors. To average person they all look the same. There are also the Massey Fergusons that look just like the Fords. I imagine there could be different fans. The four blade fan is original to my 8N tractor.

I found this showing a 6 blade "summer" pusher fan. I'm thinking that would be counter productive going down the road on a hot rod. These all bolt to the waterpump.

I made an adaptor that will allow an old fan or modern fans to be mounted on the generator.

Thanks guys for the info. A smaller 6 blade fan would probably be less weight on the generator bearings. I might have to adapt one.

I'd think a larger blade with less blades would be better. Sometimes less is more.


To some, 2 blades push more air then 6 blades. RPMs considered. More blades, more air to impede. Just a thought. 4 blades should be plenty to move air. Planes have used 2 blades for ever. Granted later 4 blades, and the new stuff is like almost turbine.

You guys need to checkout RMI-25 & you just might not need a bigger/more bladed fan. I use it in every one of my vehicles 7 have not had had any heating issues. This is even on my fresh 59AB bored .040 & using t-stats. Stock fan also.

A water conditioner. Not a recommendation, just a def of what it is.

For whatever it's worth.... I put a 6-blade fan on my 34 (original 21 stud). I'm assuming it must be very similar to your 32. I never had any problems with generator bearings (original 3-brush generator). I got the fan from a junk yard friend, and he said it was from a 34 'orchard truck'.
I feel that it helped cooling at low speeds.

Those 6 bladed fans are pretty heavy. The car versions were made to run off the crank.
