1931 Model AA Paddy Wagon

Doing a little research project and trying to find an original 1931 AA Paddy Wagon. It was owned by Chuck Bulger of Lawrence, Indiana. He had it at the 2005 MARC National Meet in Indianapolis. As I recall, It was a restored original from California. Chuck passed away in 2007. Any info on the whereabouts of this truck would be greatly appreciated. John M

Hi John,

Check out the September/October 1993 M.A.N. It is the cover car and there is a short article on the construction of the truck. Chuck built the body himself, it's close to an authentic recreation but a few details give it away.

It was sold on eBay in mid 2008. At that time it was wearing IL plates and I believe was in Chicago somewhere.

I have the pictures from the eBay auction somewhere I'll share if I find them.

About five years ago someone on here found the remnants of a 285-A Deluxe Patrol, everything from the divider back was missing though.

Attached is a picture of a standard Patrol that is part of the Elliot Museum in Stuart, Florida.

From what I have seen/read about the Chuck Bulger vehicle, it was a home made body with 82-B closed cab doors. The Ford sold 290-A Standard Police Patrol used the same doors as the 85-B panel delivery. Check out https://aafords.com/closed-bodies/. There is a photo of the 290-A.

The Elliot-Museum photo posted above looks to have the correct doors.

Below is a picture of the Bulger AA.

Here are the pictures from the auction. They are dated July of 2007. I believe it was up on ebay a few times without selling before someone finally bought it.

As Neil said the doors on Chuck's recreation are standard doors and not the ones that were used on the panel based trucks. Additionally the divider is different as is the rear step. I cannot recall if the recreation also had the shotgun cabinets in it or not.

The Elliott Police Patrol came out of Alabama prior to restoration and is the only known extant Police Patrol. I have a picture of what I believe to be that vehicle from back when it was still in use. The Elliott patrol has a door that has been added to the rear area because, as I was told, Mr Elliott wanted to be able to transport his friends and families to events and felt it was safer to have a rear door on it.

John, do you still use your aol email?

Re: 1931 Model AA Paddy Wagon

In 1958 I was looking for a Model A or AA truck for my business. I found an AA Police paddy wagon for sale in the area of Gloucester Mass and also a US Mail truck on the passenger car chassis in the same area. I drove to the area and looked over both vehicles and I purchased the Mail truck. As it would be used on trips to flea markets up to 125 miles each way the Mail truck seemed to me to be more suitable than the paddy wagon. I have no idea what became of it, but I kept the mail truck about 60 years and it now lives in Ohio.

Boston PD had at least two Standard Police Patrols; maybe the one you found was one of theirs!

This is going to drive me nuts! The picture you sent has a 1931 Illinois plate on it so you'd think the truck is here somewhere. I wish the family would get back to me, it would make finding it much easier. We'll keep trying. Thanks! JM

That looks like the one. It has a 1931 Illinois plate on it and they added a star to the door but where is it? Yes on the email address, too old to change. JM

FYI - Information I have found:

It was advertised in Hemmings for $45,000 in March of 2018. It was located in Escondido CA at that time. The story about it was in the September-October 1993 Model A News.

The owner's information was (may or may not still have this vehicle):
John Kreitzer

Might be worth $45,000 if the “prisoner” comes with it, or maybe that babe with the Tommy Gun that pops up on Ford Barn now and then.

JulieLynn, you may be able to private message CPDSarge. At the top right of the window you will see where it says “Welcome JulieLynn”, two lines below it says “Private Messages”. Click on that and compose a message there to CPDSarge. Welcome to the site.

Re: 1931 Model AA Paddy Wagon

Thank You 31 Woody for the warm welcome! I tried to message, I will try again.

shew01 !! Really? I became a member less than 24 hours ago!

You want the story?? Here ya go (it is quite boring).

My name is Julie. I am not a "scammer", I was just trying to be nice and let CPDSarge know where the vehicle is. I am not able to respond to his private message since I am a new user (required 10 posts before authorized to private message). Every once in a while I google search my name and my husbands name, and that is how I came across this thread (told you this would be boring :-) ). So I became a member yesterday, to be able to notify the person looking for this vehicle.

My husband and I purchased it on ebay years ago (someone posted that auction info above. He always wanted a Paddywagon and we love old cars. We do not restore or work on them, we just love and respect antiques and history. We are workaholics, so the Paddywagon has been in storage and only seen the light of day 2x since we brought it home. We took it to the shop to have the top repaired (small part of the material above the windshield started to peel off off during transport), and then we took it out for a fundraiser. I do have some pictures and I would love to share, but I think since I am a new member I do not have permission to load them up. I put my number up so CPDSarge could contact me if he wanted more information on it. I will try to put some pictures up, please be patient with me.
If I cannot get the pictures to post, would a senior member be able to post them for me if i give you my email?

Again, not a scammer, just a hardworking girl who loves her antiques and wanted to share information.
