Anyone using AMPCO top oiler?

I bought one of those AMPCO top oilers to install under the hood as an interesting option, so mostly just for looks. But, being as how all of the plumbing will be there, I might actually try to use it occasionally with maybe MMO or Seafoam. Anyone use these on their flatmotor? If so, please share your thoughts and recommendations. Thanks.

I installed one on each of our '39's, the Ford CS and the Lincoln Zephyr. The top oiler makes a difference in the smoothness (for lack of a better term) of the engine. I use MMO in them and, I would recommend them.:)

Cool, thanks Vic. I have two base plates for the 2x2 set up. Are you using yours with any multi-carb set ups? Also, if you are not using the oiler, does closing the valve completely close off the vacuum loss? Thanks for the response.

I have one on my '35 and '36. I like them for a couple of reasons. First, they do seem to quiet the engine down and generally makes things smoother. The second reason is the attention they get. A while back I was at a car show which placed my '35 next to an over-chromed Chevy with a 350 engine. Result, the crowd constantly collected around my '35 trying to figure out what the "red stuff" in the jar was for! The poor Chevy owner spent most of his time sitting in his lawn chair playing the role of the lonely Maytag repairman! Gotta love it! :)

In another car show I saw an oiler setup on a flathead. The reservoir jar had a label reading "Viagra." :)

I have not installed one on a multi carb set up as yet; I may put one on our '47 Convertible, running two Holly's... I'm not sure about shutting off the vacuum completely with the adjustment on the top of the oiler... you might want to plug the line if you don't plan on using it however, if you are going through the trouble of installing the unit, you might as well use it and get all the benefits.

I recommend it ,quiets down the valves. Runs smoother. This is on a 35 roadster

I installed one on my 46 Coupe and like the others have mentioned, the engine likes it. Steve

I would like to install an AMPCO top oiler. Where are you guys finding them, on the swap page? Are there many units out there to be had?

I plan to use the NOS Allstate (complete with instructions printed in 1952) in the picture. I have a NOS Ampco install kit as well. It will go on my 1952 Marmon Herrington Ford...someday! The White oiler is NOS. The two on the left date from the 30s. I rechromated the die cast tops to freshen them up. Not pictured is a NOS Shaler.

Steve, I went to their website. They claim these are NOS being sold. What did you think about the oiler you bought from them? NOS or reproduction?

Re: Anyone using AMPCO top oiler?

This guy found a bunch these in a warehouse. I bought a dozen of them from him before he decided what to do with them. They are not an ornament, with MMO in them they lubricate the valves and rings. Without MMO the valves will stick slightly with this new gas. I would say from the number of companies that made oils they had sticky valve problems when these cars were new. G.M.

Seth, ya never know, maybe Santa might put one under your tree...:)

Re: Anyone using AMPCO top oiler?

I have one on our 46. Nice. Now, they will lubricate only the valves wheras if you add it to your gas tank it will not only lube/clean the valves but also the whole fuel line and carb. The problem is that I forget sometimes when gassing up to add it. I still add MMO to the gas when I remember. There was a rumor a few years ago that GM even added it to his corn flakes in the morning.;)

Re: Anyone using AMPCO top oiler?

The discussion here has definitely convinced me to make the thing serviceable. But now that brings up some new questions. I was at the store looking for some fittings for the copper tubing that comes with the kit, just like the one around the Allstate Vaporizer pictured above. I measured the tubing and it looks like it is just under 1/4", about .20". Is that some weird tubing size?

Also, I like FlatheadFan's idea on driving the other car owners batty with folks giving the vaporizer's fluid the eye at shows. But, I have an inherent fear of that glass jar getting broken. It seemed to me that the jar threads might be the same size as the screw on cans used on old style paint guns. I thought I had one to check this out but I can't find a thing since I cleaned up my garage. Does anyone have an old spray gun around to check this out for me. I kind of like the idea of using the shiny spray can with the AMPCO decal on it.

Plumbers size piping by the ID and refrigeration people size it by the OD.

I would like to put one on my '34 pickup. How does it mount? To the firewall? Thanks, Mike Happy V-8ing.
