Late 1932 Driveshaft Length

Hi,
I need to build a driveshaft for a late 1932 rear (the scalloped one that is the same as 1933-34). I have the original torque tube. Does anyone have one they could measure? If not, is the driveshaft 1.6” shorter than the torque tube for outside to outside? I have done a bunch of searching and there are several different lengths quoted.

I have a 1934 driveshaft to shorten, the transmission end is badly damaged on the bearing surface. I picked up a 1936 end, it is larger at the tube end. Has anyone turned one down to fit? What other years would be better to use? Is the early 1932 the same driveshaft size, but different on the pinion end?
Thanks

Hi; Need to do a search here- this topic has had many threads posted on it; There are two different lengths for 33/34 torque tubes and the '32 is even by it's self. Newc

Duke .....Here's what I have posted many moons ago, and nobody has spoken-up to the contrary....YET! DD

TORQUE TUBES '33/'34

V8 = 61-13/16"
4-cyl = 60-3/16"

DRIVE SHAFTS '33/'34

V8 = 60-5/32"
4-cyl = 58-7/16"

How to tell a 1932 Ford Differential? Where the Radius Rods join the Axle Housings, the Flanges are straight, and not angled as they are on 1933 and 1934 Ford Differentials.

Re: Late 1932 Driveshaft Length

Late '32 rear axle housings use straight radius rods like the '33-'34 axles.

Re: Late 1932 Driveshaft Length

Thank you, I had a length on of 51.660” very close to 51 5/8”. Is that length measured end to end or transmission end to pin?

This is a late 1932. The other picture is an early. Hope to help someone else trying to figure this out.

Re: Late 1932 Driveshaft Length

I believe the photo above is a 33/34.
32: Brackets straight, rods are bent.
33/34: Brackets angled, rods are straight.

Re: Late 1932 Driveshaft Length

Mart,

Actually there are two versions of the late '32 straddle-mounted pinion gear rear axle assembly. The first version (rarely encountered) had dog-leg radius rod ends like the earlier '32 axles and the second version had the straight radius rods like a '33-'34 axle.

Re: Late 1932 Driveshaft Length

Yes, the picture I posted is a late 32 rear axle. Unfortunately it has no driveshaft. David, do you know anything about the length? I am a little unsure as someone measured one for me and it was as long as the torque tube. He was not positive that it came out of the tube as he bought it disassembled.
Thanks

Re: Late 1932 Driveshaft Length

Sorry, but I am away from my old car stuff at present and I do not want to rely on my memory. One aspect of the question that can cause there to be different answers is what part or whole of the shaft was measured.

For example, the original engineering drawing for the late '32 axle cites a 52.318" length for the drive shaft and 54.89" for the torque tube, both of which are not the same as those cited in V8COOPMAN's post above. I did not make note of what the drawing dimensions used for the measurement points and until I do that I cannot reconcile the differences.

Re: Late 1932 Driveshaft Length

I did a video on this and had some magic numbers.
From my investigations from factory ford parts the driveshaft is 45mm shorter than the torque tube. If you have the torque tube you can deduce the length of the driveshaft.
45mm = 1.771" Nearest fractional size is 1-49/64"
I found using mm for this job was far easier than inches.

FWIW here's a link to the video.

Re: Late 1932 Driveshaft Length

V8Coopman has it pretty close. When a buddy shortened his 34V8 torque tube and driveshaft for his '32 He made it 8 9'16 " shorter .

Re: Late 1932 Driveshaft Length

I have both the driveshaft and torque tube out and coop's measurement is correct.

Thank you everyone, Deuce5wndw, is the measurement end to end or end to pin hole?
Thank you!

In this REAL World, the OVERALL length don't mean squat! What is important is to capture the exact length between the CENTERLINE of the speedometer gear (as mounted on front of drive shaft), and the center of the lock pin hole in the splined pinion gear at rear. DD

Measured end to end. Uncut original 32.

Thank you deuce, could you show the measurement from the pinion end to the pin hole? Thank you!
