Front generator bearing screeching.....

In the 50+ years I have owned this Model A, this is the first time I’ve encountered a generator bearing issue. I’ve ordered both a front bearing and bushing, as I’m not sure which will be needed. This is the original 1930 generator (I guess I really don’t know this, as I’m the 4th owner of this car....).

Any guidance in advance will be greatly appreciated !
thanks - Jim

Have you ever lubricated the bearings as specified in the owners instruction book?

Yes - I’ve always oiled both bearings every 1000 miles or so. The generator was rebuilt by a local automotive electrical shop in the early 70’s, and I‘ve had no trouble until now, but I am now driving the car a good bit more.

I had a problem with the front bearing of my generator screeching,it turned out that the bearing was spinning in the housing.I put 3 punch marks in the outside of the housing so the bearing would be a light press fit and the problem was solved.

As long as it's been since a rebuild, I would give it all a real good inspection. It may be time again. If you are not comfortable with rebuilding, Berts has some nice rebuilts.

thanks to a for the responses. I’ll probably pull the generator our today or tomorrow to take a look at the bearing.

Re: Front generator bearing screeching.....

You might consider and sealed bearing in the front. That's what they use in modern alternators. After it is back together you can't see it and you don't have to lube. As an example consider a Federal 1203LL but there are many others. Ed

A bearing will make a grinding noise, squealing could mean a belt slipping, a little wd40 on belt while running will tell you. Wd40 will not make belt slip, but if noise goes away, the belt could be the problem. Seen it many times on other vehicles.

Re: Front generator bearing screeching.....

Removed the generator earlier today and cannot remove the fron bearing from the shaft. I’ve taken the C-retainer ring off, but the spacer and bearing will not budge when I put a puller on them. What’s the best way to remove the bearing ??

Thanks - Jim
