rear wheel stud installation
 

I am replacing a rear wheel stud on my 1930. There is a little triangle shaped guide that fits into a notch in the brake drum. What is the best way to set the stud in place ? Does it have to be machine pressed or will a hammer and brass punch work ? Thanks in advance.

They have to be swedged. 20 ton, at least, press. Here is one thread, there are likely others.

Not all machine shope can do this swedging correctly. I had one shop try and his press was not strong enough. Then another tried and i had to go back so he could try again. Finally i went to have the drums turned and the studs were. That machinest said you need a 40 ton press to swedg thoes studs.

That little "triangle shaped guide" is nothing but a line up guide in the hub. I use a pres that makess 28 to 30 tons. All that pressure has to be on the stud - not he drum. Takes a special "jig" to get everything square and level or you WILL crack drum or hub Recommend yo take the drum/hub to someone that has right equipment and has done it.

Snyder sells the swedging tool.I had them do mine since I was installing all new drums.

My local auto machine shop has the tools in house to that work, maybe you could check around your area to find a shop that can do this job for you.

Before you even start to mount the drums to the hubs, make sure the flange is straight, many are not. We bolt everything together using large washers to bridge the hub and drum with studs installed. Just like changing a tire, do one then one across from it etc.
