Fuel Filter
 

Really do not like the in-line filters between the sediment bowl and carb. Anyone tried the filter element that fits inside the sediment bowl ? Think I would like to go that route if it is effective.

I tried one several years ago. The ethanol gas softened the housing and closed off the fuel flow. Perhaps today they tolerate the current fuel blend better.

I'm not a fan of the inline filters either but they filter particulants better than the original screens.

I am using one that fits inside the glass original sediment bowl. I change it once a year
and it always has stuff in it. You have to make up a new gasket to seal the little holes
in the top of it or it won't filter.

I've been using the NAPA3039 for over a year with no issues.
The fuel from the tank flows into the center hole in the filter, out thru the paper element and then up thru the holes in the endplate. The bottom of the filter is sealed so the fuel has to exit thru the paper and up and out the holes in the top on the outside of the element to the carb on the NAPA 3039.
To see what you have trapped you have to remove the filter and cut the paper as the trash is trapped on the inside.

After getting something (water and something else) in my gas late last year, put one in my truck. Was never able to identify the stuff. Was my fault, put some gas in from a gas can that I've had for years and never cleaned out. Had to clean out/flush the Tank, clean the pencil filter and carb screen, flush the lines, and clean out the carb/jets/passages.


This is the one I got, no spring to keep it in position, call 1st to make sure but it was a set of two filters. Take the Bowl off, put this in the bowl, the rubber gasket holds it up, remove the screen, and add the filter/bowl.

One of the issues with an inline is using a proper size filter for the A, not advisable using a small engine/mower/etc. filter, may run into flow restriction not getting enough gas to the carb. A friend tried a Briggs and Stratton filter from a Farm Supply Store, and wondered why his A would stall, back fire, etc. - fuel starvation. Started OK and ran at low RPMs, but out of town cruising the issue showed up.

I also use the NAPA3039 for 4-5 dollars.

Unlike Dodge I have to alter the gasket to free up the holes. If the holes are covered the fuel does not flow.

The Napa and Wix appear the same, the gas goes in the center, comes out the multiple small holes, not shown is a gasket that must be used, but not included or referenced. If you reuse or source a model A cork or neoprene gasket there is a chance the holes will be blocked.


The Snyders element appears to be smaller diameter but deeper than the Napa/Wix, allowing for the placing the outlet holes to clear the gasket, and the filter gasket is included in the purchase.


Costs - Napa/Wix is perhaps half the cost of the Snyders, but the Napa/Wix has added cost of supplying the gasket.


So depends if you want the more expensive included drop in replacement with Snyders, or if you are ok with the less expensive Napa/Wix, having to supply your own gasket, and possibly modifying the gasket. - your choice.

I've been using the Wix brand for a couple of years on my 31. I haven't added or modified any gasket. There is probably a gasket between the glass bowl and the metal holder. Am I doing something incorrect? Am I not getting the gas filtered? I haven't had any gas flow problems.

I am not sure if the gasket is required on the Wix, but would guess it is needed to keep the sediment bowl from leaking gas. Perhaps the material of the filter is enough to prevent leakage?


I do know there is a gasket used with Snyders since it is included,, shown, and instructions say to use it. This is what I use.

A person can go TOO far with filters and restrict flow . I only use the stand up filter that fits into the cut off valve at the tank . I consider the stand up filter a must for the model A . I feel that anything that passes through this filter will pass right through the carburetor with no problem .

I'm sorry but I think you better shop around a little. you can get the 33039 WIX $3.78 at Rock Auto + 35¢ for the gasket as opposed to $18.50 for Snyder's filter.

Check with Snyders, when I ordered 2-3 years ago I got 2 for the $18.50. Still higher than the other 2.

If still that way, yes just a little misleading , should just say Qty. 2. No way I would have paid $18.50 for 1. I went with Snyders since it was offered by a Mod A supplier so should work on the Mod A. The other one I saw had a spring in the Bowl, liked the spring less Snyders better. At the time was unaware of the other 2 alternatives.
