Brake Cross Shaft Diameter
 

I'm going to replace the service brake cross shaft bushings on my '31. I was wondering what the diameter of the shaft, where the bushing go, should be to safely use the standard 2 piece bronze bushing. I would want to order a repair kit the same time that I order the bushings if needed. Thank you

The shaft will be worn. Buy a bushing with sleeve kit.

I have like 4 or 5 brake cross shafts with no wear on the bushing area.

The original bushings were a fiber material in the steel or pot metal ball.

The fiber material was so it would never need lubrication as you really do not want grease or oil getting stiff here.

They do make the correct fiber type today. I personally found enough pieces to use all original parts. Kind of lucky honestly.

The brass bushing stuff works. Just understand the lubrication issues.

I was trying to determine if my cross shaft bushing area had any wear. The measurement on both ends of my cross shaft are .790 inches. On one end there was a bushing made of some kind of metal and a fiber lining on the inside. That bushing is not magnetic. On the other end is a solid metal bushing that is magnetic and does not have the fiber lining. I had quite a bit of slop sideways and up and down. I'm still not sure if there is any wear to the shaft.

The area directly inside of the cross shaft levers (arms) will not have any wear. The OD of that area will be the same as the bushing area as it was machined in one op.

When I changed mine I used the solid brass ones and cut them in half myself with a Dremel cutoff wheel. The gap created helped give the bushing a tight fit and gives a space to stick the needle adapter on my grease gun in.

I just measured one, it was 13/16" (.8125")
