heater control valve
 

I can't seem to find any info on the 52 Ford flathead heater control valve. What does it do? When should it be turned on or off? Really confused?

It controls how much water goes thru the heater core. More water more heat. Less water less heat. It controls the temp of the air when you run the fan..... Mark

If you have the Magic-Aire type control lever it should be moved to off position when no heat is required.
The Fan can be operated with the heat off.

So if the control valve were eliminated you would have full flow thru the heater core all the times, and you would control the heat either on or off with the lower control lever that positions the dampers.

Except for the amount of water flow you could operate the heater without the flow valve, does this sound right?

There are mechanical water control valves that can be put in line and operated by a cable, such as this. Lots of variations, look on ebay

This heater flow control valve came on my '47. Its mounted on the passenger side head in one of the two threaded connections next to the top hose outlet. It is controlled by a choke cable from a position next to my heater switch. Coolant flow thru the heater can be shut off.
As noted above, similar designs is still available.

there's a simple manual shut off valve available at most parts stores for about $10- just open in winter and close in summer. Actually with the slide control on my 51 the air flow is diverted from the heater core unless it's in the heat position, so no need for a shutoff valve.
