What is the problem?? I think you could get away with a small drop in pressure this way, but trying to fix a large excess of pressure would probably cut delivery to nothing along with the pressure. If you have a LOT of excess pressure, like 5-6-7 pounds of pressure measured, your pump contains the wrong spring under the diaphragm. I have heard that many new pumps available have this problem...fuel pump parts have a lot of potential interchangeability, and I think the manufacturers may have simply used a more readily available pump from perhaps a '70's Chevy or something. Likeliest cure is to swap in a spring from your old pump... Flathead pump does not have a lot of working stroke and I don't think you can get away with moving it very far at all. You need to fix the problem, and it is that spring that is meant to control the pressure. There are excellent FH pump specialists on this board. |
Re: Stock fuel pump pressure adjust I just installed a new Carter pump on my '49. Also a new push rod. The stroke was correct also. The pump tested 5#. The carb is holding it so I just left it alone....
Figured as the pump wore some the pressure will drop to 4-1/2 # which is Ok accoring to Ford Manual. |

Re: Stock fuel pump pressure adjust Thanks guys. My problem is very hard starting when hot, especially after a wait of 10-15 min. I've occasionally noticed fuel dripping down inside the carb after shut-down and the pressure at the fuel inlet drops off quickly sometimes,but the needle/seat seems fine. I'm suspecting maybe fuel boiling in the bowl. The reason I'm leaning twards fuel pump is that I've tried 4 different carbs ( all rebuilt) and still am having the same problem. Otherwise the car runs really great hot or cold and has no other carb issues ( it has never flooded, the power valve works properly in all 4 carbs, and I can idle the engine down below 500 RPM and it's velvet smooth). I've been messin' with flatheads for many years, but this thing has me stumped. Thanks again : Bruce
