Oil pump shield modification questions

1 Attachment(s)
I was going through my box of model a oil pumps to choose which one I was going to rebuild. And found one that someone previously had modified the outer pump baffle/shield. Is this something anyone here has seen done before. If so are there any benefits to performing this modification or it is it hurting the function. Ben

It hurts function, raises the minimum oil level that can be pumped

Also more apt to 'aerate'. The shield is designed to force the pump to pick up oil from very low in the pan.

Perhaps modified due to reoccurring sludge in the bottom of the oil pan? Poor maintenance or crappy oil back in the day..

Thanks for the replies guys. That is what my thoughts were as well but thought I would ask since the motor was running when disassembled.
