Re: 1931 a truck

Someone replaced it with a new one sometime in the past. This is based on what looks like a cast number pad and not one that is ground down.

Your block is a "diamond block". Your casting date is, August 24th, 1937. see the Diamond shape <> to the right of the valve cover near the timing gear cover.

For what it is worth: Your indented firewall is a later one of 1931 issue. The earlier Fords had a flat firewall and the gasoline shut off valve was located inside above the choke rod, instead of a shut off on the outside of the firewall like yours. Looks as though you have a pick up cab build by Budd, as it has a steel top instead of a fabric covered top. Two side mounts? A bit busy for a pick up which ordinarily came with just only one spare tire on the left front fender. You exhaust manifold is built by Autolite and it is missing its top cover (plenum) that directs the hot air into the passenger compartment through the hole in the firewall located at the passenger's toes. You have a wonderful model A Ford. Congratulations.

Denis45700,
If you are new to Model A's, my first suggestion is to find & join a Model A club. I worked for the Uncle Sam and moved a lot; I know there are a lot of good clubs out there.

Re: 1931 a truck

Jay McCord is starting up a Budd Special Interest Group so you might want to look into that. Jay is currently a member of the 2017-2018 MAFCA board. From what I know, Budd trucks were only built in late '31 so the indented firewall makes sense. Steel roof too of course! What serial number do you find on the body? (Found on the cross member inside the cab just in front of the seat in the middle)

What is the chain for that drapes across the breather tube?

Re: 1931 a truck

I also wondered about the chain . This forum is so great ,there are so many really great guys on here so willing to share their knowledge. I really like your pickup and it looks as though it had some good previous owners. You have a tillitson carb and the sediment bulb down by it is also an add on. I can't see any problem with this. I suppose the former owner was getting some sediment from the tank. Watch the bulb and see if it accumulates in there, and occationally empty it. Have fun with this baby, Frank

That chain is for when the air maze falls off,so you don't lose it in the street. My first A came to me like that, and it had been parked since 1954.
