Oil Leak
 

When you adjust the crankshaft bearings what do you do to prevent oil from leaking out thru the rear main bolts. I had no leaks from the rear main I adjusted the bearings and have a leak at the rear main now. I pulled the pan the gasket and cork seal looked good. When I look in through the bell housing I can see oil weeping from the rear main bolts. There was also a hard crud at the edges of the main bearing cap that was cleaned off should a sealer be applied at the very edge of the cap. Should a sealer also be applied to the bolts.

I put permatex hi temp silicone (the red silicone) on my main bolts and have no issue with main bolts leaking oil.

Ans. leak from bolts : use a small amount : The Right stuff under the nuts.

I have never seen the oil leak from the rear main bolts. You have to check the thrust clearance on the rear main along with the crankshaft/bearing clearance. If the thrust is over .012 you will have a leak. More clearance- more severe the leak.

Hi Ed, I too have not seen leaks from the bolts. But, I use a little 'goop' when putting all that together. You said you adjusted the bearings, what were they and what are they now ? I tend to set the rear pretty tight. How's the weather been ?

I believe I set them at .0015. Weather been nice calling for a fair amount of snow this weekend single digit temps to below 0 next week for temp warm back up following week. I had no leaks before I adjusted the bearings. I removed a hard crud at edges of cap. I will have to take back apart and check things over again. For checking end play of crankshaft you have a good method with engine in car.

i set them at .0015" or a bit tighter.
I use gasket goop to hold them in place and where they meet.
Maybe a dial indicator could be set on the front pulley or front of flywheel to check end play.
Was planning on making our way to the Naples valley last summer but never made it, didn't even get to the festival.

I was thinking of the same thing with a dial indicator. Not sure what you mean when you say gasket goop to hold them in place. Would you be referring to applying sealer to the shims. I was planning on driving the A out your way seems like the summer went fast.

I don't use gasket sealer on the shims. I use it to hold the gaskets in place, especially a little extra where they meet one another.
Time does go by pretty fast, faster the older we get.

Thanks every one for the information. Patrick I use gasket cement to hold the gaskets in place to. I was not sure how gasket cement could work on the shims. Thanks
