Stubborn valves…..torch?
 

Is it advisable to cut off stubborn valves & springs with a torch?

What damage can I cause using this method?

I believe this is an A motor with mushroom valves, any help will be appreciated.

I've cut many many off with a torch, try to cut it about 1/2in. below the guide, that way you usually pry the valve up enough the get a big chiel under the head of the valve and bend the valve so you can cut the head off, some times the head will pop off the exh valve, then you can drive the guide down. If you have a block that's full of heavy oil/grease buildup you may want to consider a Sawzall, works really well and is "clean"!

P.S. Couple months back my son used this method on a '46 Dodge flathead 6-cyl, took about 10 minutes to cut through 5 stuck valves. No fire, no smoke, no mess, just a pair of heavy work gloves and the Sawzall.

The big boltcutter aint a bad tool either...little hard to get to the end cylinders outer valves but the rest goes fast without smokesignals.

Another shot...drill into the valves from top at center, increase drill size until head of valve just falls off.
Now you can use a socket a bit smaller than valve guide to drive the blasted thing straight down.
Less dramatic way is to obliterate the guide retainer clip with one of the several punches or the gooood cam type lever and then crank the whole mess stright up with the KD C clamp puller upperator.

Yeah...I used a sawsall on my 8BA. To much gunk in the valley to use a torch.

That's why the drill...you stay upstairs with your hands clean!

90 deg die grinder and a 3" zip wheel does them in short order.

Thanks guys, I used the bolt cutter method, no such thing as clean anything.
