Overdrive governor does anyone rebuild overdrive governors ?
|
Re: Overdrive governor I've found good ones on flea-pay on several occasions and they were NOS. They don't care what the voltage is. It's just a set of flyweights that act on a central rod which in turn opens or closes the switch. There is not much there at all.
I haven't paid this much for one but it is NOS. https://www.ebay.com/itm/NOS-Thunder...QAAOSwIKVd9fgV There are others and some are good used. All the Borg Warner ODs used the same basic governor for the most part. |
Re: Overdrive governor We still have a supply of NOS governors in stock. These are the later version with the steel top cap, rather than the plastic top. They are completely interchangeable.

Re: Overdrive governor Thanks for the info guys but I was looking to rebuild a couple of extra ones that I have.
I have a good one operating in my car but usually keep spares of most overdrive stuff. HAPPY NEW YEAR TO EVERYONE.. |
Re: Overdrive governor I have a plastic topped governor tagged with FoMoCo P/N 8M 6919. The cap is embossed with Bendix Products Div. What does this fit? Seems different than a Borg Warner item.

Re: Overdrive governor With respect, 8M is a first year mid century Mercury prefix. There are a lot of parts designed originally for Mercury cars that ended up in the Ford cars too. The driveshaft front knuckle/yoke and the transmission synchronizer assembly are some of them. The overdrive governor is another.
The new Mercury line was scheduled to introduce in 1948 but none of the cars were quite ready. The Bonus Built trucks were the first new intro that actually made the 1948 schedule. |

On 2nd thought, I believe 8M is 49 MERC. FORD, MERC and LINC PN Systems, while similar, were different in some aspects until brought back into FORD. |
Re: Overdrive governor KULKULZ...Didn't you mean "pants" instead of "stick" in that last line?

The below attached shows a PREFIX listing for FORD. Another MERC. The MERC is actually a model listing but you can see how they also used this in their PN Prefix chart. |
Re: Overdrive governor The big change was in 52 as you mention. The whole system changed over with further changes in 1954. There were still some 8A and 8M with some 7RA/7HA prefixes used on cross over parts but a lot of those started to disappear in the Y-block era. Ford would bring and old part back like the motor mount biscuits for example, then change to a new part number. These new part numbers then became the replacement part for the early 50s models. It makes it a challenge to find new parts sometimes for the less popular models. Figuring out what the newest part number is can be a b!tch. 8M, FAA, FAB, or B5, it can be frustrating.
