Hello! It's time for another video update on my crusty Flatty project. Guess what.. It's finally time to start putting things back together.
Once again plagued by camera problems, I slid in the cam but lost the footage. Lets pick it up as I put the lifters in, put the gallery plugs in and faff about with the bearings and crank. I'm not an engine builder. Engine builders please avert your eyes. This is how I did it. Thanks for following along.

There are some things I show that might be of particular interest to barners.
I show the use of a tire lever to press down the inlet valve guides. This was discussed here before.
I show how you can assemble the old type valve assemblies up without a compressor. (I only learnt this myself recently).
I also show how you can align the crank to the cam with a minimum of messing about. Even I was surprised at how well this worked.
I show an improvised handle for lifting the flywheel end of the crank.
I also show how holding the engine vertically can be useful - this becomes more relevant in the next video. That was an easy mod that was well worthwhile.

Mart, something I do not recall seeing in your videos, valve adjustment. Couldn't see your followers, so I don't know if they are adjustable. Are they, and have I missed your valve adjustments.

I recently did valves on an engine I'm now putting together, and did them for the first time the Ford way, grinding stems. Did a setup on my lathe for the stem grinding.

Mart, like the way you did the valves, including your wheel technique. I also did a set recently where I used the stem grinding technique for the first time. I approached it differently, not better or as well, but differently for anyone liking to see another way.
I purchased a new fine grinding wheel. I made an arbor for the stone and chucked it up in the lathe. I then trued the stone to spin perfectly true with a diamond dresser. Next set a tool holder to hold the valve true with a run-out gauge. When grinding the valves I ran the stems across the full face of the stone so the stone would not degrade as I went. Got close with the lathe, as you did, then hand ground the final .001" or so with a piston ring grinder. Having a lathe sure helps in many situations. Keep shareing your adventure, its like not having to work alone. Photos of my setup. Worst part was cleaning up the lathe with all that grit ending everywhere.

Missed the Friday show but caught up on Sunday. The engine is looking really good. Enjoyed

Yeash, ralph, I just left the existing one in place. I'm sticking to the original premise of repairing what is broken and leaving anything that is serviceable in place. It will probably coing to come back and bite me, but I don't view this fixer upper as a lifetime build. i can foresee it getting reworked a second tome around sometime in the future to address the less than perfect rods, crank and bearings.

I wanted to see if that motor could be made to run. That is what I am sticking to.

Sorry to have to tell you this "Mart", but I'm afraid that seal will probably leak badly. I was very careful when I put the new rear seal in my current build, and it did not leak a drop. This is the engine I originally put the "Low Output" Speedway oil pump in, that I replaced after about a month. I was extremely careful removing and replacing the pan, but the damn thing now leaks, not bad but it leaks. I can't imagine what it might be like with an old hard seal that had been in a long time.

Of course, now that I've posted this, yours will probably seal up tight.

Dunno, Tubs, I wouldn't at all be surprised if it leaks. I view this as an experiment, to see just how resistant this old motor is to being less than perfect in so many areas.

I'm working towards having it running in my 33 coupe so I can put some miles on it.
