Escutcheon/ Door Handle Removal Idea

An earlier thread motivated me to find the tool I made in 1978 to remove the old and install the new door handles and Escutcheon pins. You locate it around the handle using the slots. Then you lean against it with your body/legs and the OD of the PVC pushes against the outer flange of the Escutcheon plate pushing it inward so as to get access to the little pin with a pin punch and a hammer. The brown burn marks on the OVC are from the propane torch I used to soften the PVC for easy bending to size to fit the Escutcheon plate. The black electrical tape protects the handle and the Escutcheon. Interior door panel is LB. Works great. Perhaps this will help someone.

Now THAT is ingenuity and imagination at it's VERY best, Jim. Pretty damned affordable to make, too! DD

1978? Have had this tool since 1953.
Insert between handle and escutcheon to push out pin.
To reinstall pin, mount handle with tool partially installed, install pin from opposite side and pull tool, done.

51-Merc: Gee Whillikers! That is really cool. Wonder if it would have worked for me? Thanks. My problem was that the LB door panels are quite a bit thicker than the OEM and I needed something to apply equal pressure in order to be able to push the panel inward quite a bit to access the pin without cracking the Escutcheon pin.

I have no doubt that it would work. The one I have has done 100's of door handles on cars during the time I was doing body work for a living.
The tool thickness is bigger than the diameter of the pin and holds the escutcheon away from it as the pin is being pushed out.
You don't have to push in on the escutcheon except a little to insert the tool.

Just ran across this stream and where does the spring go ? Behind the door panel ? Which way does the spring cone face ?

Kool tool! There is another useful thing about the photos. I've made a number of custom tools over the years but one thing I've started to do is LABEL the tool for it's use! I have a number of tools I made years ago & now I look at them & say "what the heck did I make that for?"

I put the small hole of the spring to the regulator. Big end against the door panel.
