Temperature gauge
 

I have two temperature gauges (NOS I believe) that have the protection wrap around the copper line. The red liquid starts in the middle of the gauge which is indicated by the scale at about 160 degrees. I would think that the liquid needs to be at the bottom of the gauge possible out of sight until the temperature of the engine begins to warm.

Does anyone know of a way to get the red liquid down to the bottom of the scale?

I have put them in the freezer and they do drop down to the bottom, but once I take them out, they go both go back to the center of the scale.

I had a similar problem, but the liquid separated in the sight glass. I uncoiled the bulb end and hung the gauge up to allow gravity move fluid back to bulb. It did work. It is worth a try.

Just fit the gauge to your car and allow the engine to operate through several hot and cold cycles and the gauge will sort itself out. Regards, Kevin.

Also place the bulb in boiling water before installing in the car. This will give you a benchmark line on the gauge so you know where boiling point is(before steam coming out the radiator overflow!!)
