Speedometer cable lubrication

Does the cable need any form of internal lube in it? My friend put some heavy oil in the cable, and the internal cable broke right away. I'm thinking it caused a drag enough to break it.
What is proper?

Re: Speedometer cable lubrication

the cable should be removed from the housing, wiped clean with a rag and coated with fresh cable lubricant such as Luberplate whit grease:

No. 105 "B" Tube General Purpose Grease:
The original white grease in handy tube. Ideal for locks, latches, hinges, wiper mechanisms, speedometer cables, or anywhere you need a light-bodied, grease type lubricant. Part No. L0034-086.
