How to pack a rear hub bearing video

I had never packed the rear hub bearing before, and I couldn't find a decent video so I made one..

How often should these bearings be packed?(# of miles?)

Hi brum1,

Les Andrews Book #1 say's Every 500 miles. Page 3-2

Perhaps the reason why you could not find a video or possibly instructions how to pack the rear wheel/hub bearings is that they are not packed. The Ford issued lub chart says they are to be greased every 500 miles with a pressure gun, the fitting is on the underside of the end of the axel housing.

Re: How to pack a rear hub bearing video

Frank,

Yes they have grease fitting, but a wheel bearing should never be installed dry. You will never know if your grease has 100% coverage. I'm pretty sure Ford greased them while installing them onto the car at the factory, they would be foolish if they hadn't. Les Andrews book even say's to install with grease. Page 1-362 bullet point #5.

It isn't recommended to pull and grease the bearings at 500 miles, just top off at the grease fitting.

Then again, I could be wrong...

Bill

I tend to disagree. I packed it, and as pointed out it is written in Les Andrews to pack them. Also the grease fitting is usually clogged or the seal could be bad and end up pushing the grease towards the axle tube instead of the bearing cavity.

Using modern lubricants, 500 miles seems like a very short distance. I wonder if this spec is a carry-over from old lube charts/instructions? For example, many modern bearings cant even be lubed, but are good for many thousands of miles.

I think that the added work of using a hub puller for the rears means you could do the rears every 5-10k or something like doing the rears every second time you do the fronts.

Or, ... whenever you have the rear drum's off for a brake inspection or other work in the area.

I pack when the hub is off and use the Zirk otherwise, but not every 500 miles with good newer style grease.

Re: How to pack a rear hub bearing video

I give the rear wheel bearings a shot of grease every time I service the car. Because I have an oil filter and do long distances I service it at about 3-4,000 miles. I have never taken the hub off to pack the bearing but if I were assembling one, I'd pack it beforehand with proper wheel bearing grease, not chassis grease like it gets when I use the grease nipple.
I've done about 45,000 miles in that car and the bearings are still going fine.
That's just my experience!

How did you like pulling that inner grease seal? I had to wail away on one of them for 8-10 minutes like a monkey with a slide hammer. And they have a lock ring as well? Didn't see the need for that!

Why pull the seal unless there is a reason? Why not leave it there, wash out the old grease and pack in the new. I know, removing the seal allows you to inspect the rollers but after washing out the old grease you can get a good look too. It's not like these are prone to failure. Sometimes I think we go a little bit overboard with the way we treat these cars these days. I bet they didn't get too much maintenance back in the day, yet they kept going (proof of good design and good materials).

Thanks for the response,

BTW, they sell a hub seal remover which I found invaluable and prevents damage to surrounding hardware,

That's what I should have done, especially when I found out what the new seal cost!

Re: How to pack a rear hub bearing video

the new seal is only $5
http://www.snydersantiqueauto.com/hub-seals

And I have used this puller on other cars with great success:
https://www.harborfreight.com/catalo...&q=seal+puller

But this all was for a brand new hub and a clean bearing... the reason for all of this wasn't for inspection only.

Re: How to pack a rear hub bearing video

I got raked over the coals by NAPA, they wanted $37 , I talked them down to $27. Live and learn. Brick and mortar keeps complaining about how online is killing them, perhaps if they weren't so prone to extortion...
